WINDOtN-sHUTTEfi oPERATlNG DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming partof Letters Patent No. 689,132, dated December 1'7, 1901.
Application filed September 3, 1901. Serial No. 74,101. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ERNST L. SOHWANEN- GEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Shutter-Opcrating Devices and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in window-shutter-operating devices.
The object of theinvention is to provide a device of the above character which may be operated from the interior. of a window to open or close the shutters and which is simple in construction and reliable in its operation.
Preceding a detail description of my invention reference is made to the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is an elevation of a portion of the inner side of a window-casing, showing my improved shutter-operating device. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the same. Figs. 3 and 4 are detached views of parts of the operating device. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the wheel. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the device as shown in Fig. 2, showing the relative positions of the parts. w
In a detail description of the invention similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts.
1 and 2 designate the window-casing, the former part being on the inside of the window.
3 designates vertical strips which provide the sash-channels 4.
The device by which the window-shutters are opened and closed consists of two members, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the former of which is placed in a horizontal position on each side of the window-casing and the latter of which is secured to the shutters 5. These portions,
which form a hinge connection between the shutters and the window-casing, will now be described in detail.
6 designates a plate having screw-openings 7, by means of which it is screwed within the window-casing in position shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
8 designates a bar which extends from the plate 6 and occupies apositionin the windowcasing on each side in the rear of the channelstrips 3 3, one extreme inner end of said bar 8 projecting beyond the inner surface of the window-casing.
9 designates two strengthening-ribs which join the plate 6 and the bar extension 8.
1O designates a lug projecting from the inner extremity of the bar 8 and which has a journal-opening to receive a worm-shaft 11, of which further mention will be made. The plate 6 is bifurcated to receive a spur-wheel 12, the shaft of which has a bearing in bosses .13. This portion of the device, as shown in Fig. 3, may be termed one member of the lower hinge of each shutter. The other member of said hinge is shown in Fig. 1 and consists of a similar plate 6 having screw-holes 7, by means of which it is screwed to the inner edge of the window-shutter 5. The spur wheel 12 is mounted on shaft 1 1 in the bearing-bosses 13, and said shaft on each side of the bearing-bosses 13 is journaled in the bosses 13, as shown in Fig. 6. The wheel 12 is locked to the plate 6 by lugs 15, which project from opposite sides of said wheel, so that when the wheel is rotated it will move the shutter 5 to close or open the same, as the case may be, the shaft 14 constituting the pivot of the hinge. The worm-shaft 11, as before stated, is journaled in the lug 10, which projects from the bar 8. The outer end of said shaft has a worm 16, which engages with the lower side of the wheel 12, the said worm being projected through the openings a b of the plates 6 and 6.
17 designates a bearing-plate which is se cured to the inside casing of the window, one end thereof abutting with the inner end of the bar 8. This plate 17 has an opening 19, which affords a bearing for the inner end of the worm-shaft 11.
18 designates a hand-wheel which is secured to the inner end of the shaft 11 in a suitable position to be turned in either direction to operate the wheel 12 through the worm 16.
IcG
Having described my invention, I claim A device for operating Window-shutters, comprising plates, one of which is securable to a window-shutter, and the other of which is securable to a window-casing, an extension from the latter plate projecting on the inner side of the casing, a worm-shaft mounted on said extension, a worm-wheel mounted in said p1ates,stops on the sides of said wormwheel to limit the movements thereof, the
shaft of said Wheel forming the pivot of the hinge, said hinge consisting of said plates, and a worm-shaft engaging with said Wheel ner end of said worm-shaft, and means on the inner side of the window-casing for turning said shaft to impart the necessary movements to the Wheel.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ERNST L. SCHWANENGEL. Witnesses:
R. J. MGOARTY, THOS. J. ELLEFF.
