UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RALPH IV. J ORRE3, OF THOMASTON, CONNECTICUT.
SHUTTER-WORKER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 409,406, dated August 20, 1889.
Application filed May 4, 1889.
To to whom, it may concern.-
Be itknown that I, RALPH \VILLIAM JORRES, of Thomastoinin the county of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Shutter-Operating Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of this invention is to provide a shutter-operating device by means of which the shutter may be opened or closed without raising the sash, and which shall be so arranged that when the shutter is opened itwill be held against accidental displacement.
To the end named the invention consists, essentially, of a bracket formed with an upwardly-extending pintle and provided with a bearing for an operating-shaft, a segmental gear carried by the operating-shaft, and a segmental gear carried by the shutter, the bracket'pintle passing through the axis of said gear, the disk upon which the shaft-gear is formed having an eccentric bearing-face upon the side opposite that upon which the gear is formed, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to behad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures and letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a view of my shutier-operating device, the shutter being represented as it appears when in the open position, parts being broken away. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line w w of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of theopcrating device. Fig. at is a view of the outer end of the operating-shaft and the parts carried thereby, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a portion of a window-framerepresenting the same as it appears when provided with my improved shutter-operating device.
In the drawings, represents a bracket which is secured to the window-casing as rcpresented in Fig. 1. This bracket is provided with an upwardly-extending pintle 11, with a stop or limit plate 12, and with a recess a, which serves as a bearin g for the outer end of a shaft 13, which extends inward through the win- (low-casing and is formed with a squared section 14, upon which an operating-handle may be mounted. The shaft 13 carries a segmental Serial No. 309,611. (No model.)
In order that the shutters may be held in their open or closed positions, I provide keepers and 50, that are arranged as shown in Fig. 5, and formed with vertical flanges 0.
The parts constructed as above described are connected as represented in the drawings. Then if the shaft 13 be turned in the direction of the arrow shown in connection therewith the gear 15 will engage the gear 22, and the shutter will be swung inward to the closed position, the initial movement of the shaft 13 acting to raise the shutter vertically, inasmuch as when the shaft 13 first starts to turn the eccentric face of the flange 0 will bear upon the under side of the disk 21, and this vertical movement of the shutter will carry it clear of its outer keeper 50. Then after the shutter has been moved to a closed position the gear 15 will pass from engagement with the gear 22, and the eccentric flange 0 will once more bear upon the under side of the disk 21 and permit the shutter to gravitate to its lower position within the line of the flange 0 of the keeper 50. The range of motion of the shaft- 13 is limited by a stop f, which is arranged as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, said step striking against the stop 12, that is carried by the bracket 10, as will be readily understood.
By means of this shutter-operating device I am able to open or close the shutters or blinds from the inside, and it will be noticed that the said shutters or blinds will be securely locked in either their open or closed positions.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a sluitter-worker, the combination, with a segmental gear arranged for connection with a shutter, of a shaft carrying a segmental gear for engaging the teeth of the segmental gear carried by the shutter, and an eccentric bearing-face opposite the segmental gear for engaging the under side of the said segmental gear carried by the shutter before and after the gears are in and out of engagement, whereby the shutter will be raised prior to being swung to a closed position and lowered when in the closed position, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a shutteroperating device, the combination, with a disk formed with a segmental gear and arranged for connection with a shutter, of a bracket formed with an upwardlyextending pintle which passes through the shutter-disk at a point coincident with the axis of the gear, a shaft carrying a gear 15, having an eccentric-faced flange 'c, the outer end of the shaft being supported in a bearing formed in the bracket, substantially as described.
3. I11 a shutter-operating device, the combination, with a disk formed with a segmental gear and arranged for connection with a shutter, of a bracket formed with an upwardlyextending pintle which passes through the shutter-disk at a point coincident with the axis of the gear, a stop carried by the bracket, a shaft provided with a segmental gear, and an eccentric flange having a stop, the outer end of the shaft being supportedin a bearing formed in the bracket, substantially as described.
