ENGLEWOOD, NEW JERSEY; LEMMON.
SAID VAN WAGNER ASSIGNOR TO SAID BELT HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 688,905, dated December 7, 1901- Application filed February 6, 1901. fierial No. 46,192. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES W. VAN LEMMoN, citizens of the United States, and residents, respectively, of Hackensack and Englewood, in the county of Bergen and State of New, Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Belt-Holders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of our invention is to provide a means to fasten a belt to the suspender-buttons usually attached to a mans trousers, so that a'belt may be used and held in position at the waistband without the use of loops or straps fastened to the trousers.
Its further object is to secure a belt to the waistband of a womans skirt by means of one or more buttons attached to the said waistband.
To attain these objects, a separate complete clip or holder is used for each button to which,
it is desired to attach the belt.
Reference being had to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 showsafront view of one holder complete with thebutton in position at ct. Fig. 2 shows a side View of the holder with the button omitted.
The same letters denote the. same parts of the holder in both figures.
The holder is formed of one piece of sheet metal comprising a body portion g, through which is 'an opening c e, a tongue 0, and a downwardly-directed hook I). At cl cl the edges of the opening are depressed or backwardly bent to better receive and hold the button, and the tongue is forwardly bent at c The hook Z) is bent into a position over and in front of c, as shown in Fig. 2. The perforation or opening is at the top (at c e) wider transversely than the diameter of the button, and at the bottom (where the button is shown in position at a) it is narrower transversely than the diameter of the button.
In use the holder is first placed over the Suspender-button, the button entering through the wide part of the opening e e and passing downward between 0 and the edges d at until it is in a position as shown in Fig. 1. The holder is then capable of imparting an upward tension to the button. The upper edge of the belt is then entered between the hook I) and the tongue cand is moved upward until it is stopped by the turn f. The holder is so'proportioned that when used in this manner pressure is exerted upon opposite edges of the belt by the tongue 0 and the hook I) and upon the button by the tongue 0 and the edges 01 d.
It is understood that, as shown in the drawings, the forward bend at c and the backward bends of the edges d d are exaggerated for the sake of clearness.
Having described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, in a belt-holder made ofsheet metal, of a downwardly-pointing book, 1), in front of, or over, an upwardlypointing tongue, 0, the edges cl d and an opening, e c, which is wide at the top and narrow at the bottom, together with a body portion, g, which makes the holder integral, substantially as described.
2. In a belt-holder in combination a sheetmetal body carrying a downwardly-directed hook and an upwardly-directed tongue 1ocated in a plane to the rear of said hook said hook and tongue being connected by the frame of the body, a slot in said frame to the rear of said tongue, the upper part of said slot being enlarged to admit of the insertion of a button.
In witness whereof we have set our hands and affixed our seals in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES W. VAN WAGNER. GEO. N. LEMMON.
