SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 688,888, dated December 17, 1901. Application filed January 21, 1901. Serial No. 44,080. (No model.)
To all whom it may con/earn:
Be it known that I, RIOHARD SCHULZ, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Berlin, Germany, have invented certain new and `useful Improvements in Smoke Consumers andI do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to smoke-consumers, and has for its object means for completely burning the gases leaving the fireplaces of steam-boilers, and especially to prevent the production of smoke during stoking, and is designed to be used with furnaces that are handstoked.
Referring to the drawings, iu which like parts are similarly designated, Figure 1 is a front e1evation,partlyin section. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a detail view on a larger scale. Figs. 4 and 5 are partial sectional views, and Fig. 6 is a front elevation of a marine water-tube boiler with niy device attached.
Referring to Figs. 1 to3, s is the grate, and d the fire-space, on either side of which are located the lower Water-drums of a water-tube boiler, and between these4 drums and over the grate is the fire-space, a supporting-wall or fire-bridgefbeing built up on a structural iron foundation t, between whose walls is a suitable draft-passage connected, by means of openings a, with the ash-pit. In the, wall f, which is conveniently made, of fire-brick or cast-iron, according to requirements, is provided a slot or other Opening h or a series of such openings extending along the length of the grate and somewhat above the same. This slot connects with the draft-passage in the foundation of the boiler or water-drum and through its walls with the ash-pit, whereby air can be fed from said ash-pit through the openings a and the slot h across the direction of the current of flow of the furnacegases, preferably at that point where they leave the fire-space. Oontrolling the opening h is a damper b, located and arranged in such manner as to suitably cut off the draft,
pivoted at either end on suitable trunn-ions, one of its trunnions being connected. to lever i, capable of Opening and closing the damper. This lever i is provided with a handle u, whereby the draft can be regulated during the normal working of the furnaces. This leverf also carries a pin o. On this pin slides a slotted link or connecting-rod Zn, Whose end is connected to the end of a lever Z, said lever Z being suitably Secured to the fire-door c or to its hinge-pin m.
The Operation is as follows: During the normalrunningof the furnace butasmallamount of air besides that which passes through the grates, or in marine boilers that which is supplied by forced draft, is necessary, so that there will be little regulation to be given to the damper b, which regulation of course can be madeby moving the'leverz' up or down, said lever having free movement by reason of the pin o being capable of moving from end to end of the slot r in the end of the link k. However, during stoking, when the greatest amount of air is necessary to consume the smoke generated, these dampers should be openedfull', and this is accomplished every time the stoking-door c is opened no matter what the position of the damper Z) andleveri may be. The door in the particular case shown opens inward, the end of the lever lis raised, and together with it the rod lt, which has a free upward motion until the lower end of the slot r strikes the pin u, When lever i is lifted.
Referring to Figs. Lt, 5, and 6, in which a.
water-tebe marine boiler is shown designed, like the furnace shown in the former figures, to be hand-stoked, I have shown auxiliary draft means taking air from the ash-pit at the rear end of the grate-that is, at that part where the furnace-gases leave the fire-space and enter the flucs. Here the slot h is formed of wrought-iron plates and the fire bridge or Wall f suitably protected by fire-brick. Between this bridge and the rear wall of the ashpit is a passage leading to the slot h, and in this passage is the damperb, provided at one end with a lever i, said lever z' being connected, by means of a rod 1), extending beneath the grate, to a bell-crank lever g, one of the arms of4 the said bell-crank lever provided with a pin moving in the slot r at the forward end of the rod p, the other arm of said bell-crank being connected by rod 70 to a lever Zat the hinged points of the rotating door c. In this case the damper b by reason of the slot r in the end of rod p can be regulated by hand independently of. the movement of the door c.
However, the Operation is substantially the same as in the case of Figs l, 2, and 3. On Opening the doorc a draft is created through said door, not economical for the burning of the fuel. Consequently when coal is put on the fire a large amount of black smoke, due to unburned carbon, is produced. In order to burn this before it reaches the water-tubes and other surfaces to be heated, I direct across the path of the gases, preferably at the point where they leave the fire-space, a Stream of air, in this case somewhat preheated in the ash-pit, sufficient to promote a complete combustio. On throwing open the door the end of the lever l is lifted and with it the rod k, connected to the bell crank g. This bell-crank is rotated, and the pin o, engaging the forward end of the slot r, pulls rod p forward and with it lever t', connected to the damper b, thus rotating the latter into an open position. Air from the ash-pit will now pass up through the Opening controlled by said damper between the fire-bridge f and the rear wall of the ash-pit and take a downward course and be reverted through the slot hdirectly across the current of unburned gases leaving the fire-space.
It will be-seen from examples shown that the varied construction in the details of the devices will be necessary to meet the requirements iii various boiler Constructions; but the essential features of theinvention are means.
for directing a current of air preferably at right angles to the current of furnace-gases about where they leave the fire-space and means for controlling this current of air operated by devices connected with the stokingdoor. i
What I claim as my inventon, and desire to secure by Lettersv Patent, is-- The combination with a boiler provided with water-legs having water-drums,the grate and ash-pit, of an air-inlet extending the length of said water-drums, passages communicating with said ash-pit and air-inlet, a damper controlling the air-inlet, a rod i rigidly connected to said valve and carrying a pin Iu, a stoking-door, hinge-pins thereon, a lever Zrigidly connected to one of said hingepins, a link k, pivoted at its upper end to the lever l and having a slotted lower end into the slot of which slides the pin fu, whereby the dainper will be operated by reason of Opening the stokng-door to admit an addi tional quantity of air, and a handle w on said rod t' whereby the damper can be opened independently of the stoki/ng-door Within the limits of movement of pin v in the slot of link k, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing Witnesses. v
p RIOHARD SCI-IULZ.
