SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 393,258, dated November 20, 1888.

To LZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS B. MOORE, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Furnaces; and I do hereby` declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it apio pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates more particularly to that class of furnaces which have for their object the consumption of the products of combustion 5 and it consists in a certain improved construction, which I will now proceed to denitely describe and claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows an elevation with one side sectioned to show interior construction, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through line x x of Fig. 1.

are the gratebars, above which is the fire-box d, and below the ash-pit c. ff are the doors to the fire-box, and the ash-pit is provided with the usual doors, one of which is seen at The parts thus far described are ofordinary and well-known construction, and to these I have applied my improved coking pockets or ovens as follows: g g are chambers or pockets arranged along the side Walls of the fire-box from front to rear, access being had to the interior, for the admission of fuel, through the doors g in the front wall of the furnace. Each pocket opens into the grate-bars along the 4o lower and inner edge, as at g2, so that the coal which has been eoked in the pockets g, which form ovens, can be pushed out into the gratebars for further consumption. Between these pockets or ovens and the outer brick walls of the furnace are the chambers or passages g3, leading from the pockets g, and g4 are passages opening into the chambers g3 in the rear at g5.

(See Fig. 2.) These passages g4 extend to the front wall of the lire-box, and thence along the front wall just over the grate-bars until they 5o meet, as seen in Fig. 2, with their openings directed rearwardly.
Having now described the construction of my improved furnace, its operation is as' fol lows: rlhe pocket or oven-say on the righthand side-is iilled with coal through the door g', the iire on the grate-bars between the pockets having been previously started. The coal in the pockets is gradually eoked, the
, gases and other products passing down through @0 chambery and passage g4, where they are discharged into the fire-box just over the gratebars, and are there consumed before reaching the openingin the bridgewall h. The re in the open re-box,which has been gradually buruing out, is now replenished by pushing out the eoked coal from the pocket through the opening g2. By employing the pockets on either side alternately, coked coal can be continuously furnished to the fire, while the gases and 7o other products arising from the coal while it is being coked are conducted to the front ol' the re, and in passing over the same are consumed, thus making practically a smokeless furnace.
The heat generated by my furnace could of course be utilized for other purposes than that of generating steam.
I claim- A furnace for generating steam and for 8o other purposes, consisting of ash-pit e, gratebars c, lire-box d, and pockets or ovens g on either side of the lire-box, open at the bottom, as at (jl, and connected from the top with the front of the lire-box by the chambers g3 and 85 passages g, all operating substantially as and for the purpose stated.
