INSTRUMENT FOR FILLING DENTAL CAVITIES WITH CEMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 688,553, dated December 10, 1901. Application filed January 26, 1900. lSerial No. 2,866. (No model.)
To all whom it' may concern:
Be it known that I, IvAR E. SIQVELAND, a citizen of the `United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Instruments for Filling Dental Cavities with Cement or other Soft Filling, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in instruments for filling dental root-canals and other dental cavities with cement or other soft fillings, and has for its object to provide an instrument which shall be simple in construction and operation and which shall combine means for both holding the filling and injecting it into the root-canal or other dental cavity at the bottom or other desired place. I attain these objects by the instrument shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side view of theinstrument in open position with the plunger raised. Fig. 2 is a side view of the jaws in partially-closed position and partly broken away, and Fig. 3 is an end view of the jaws in partially-closed position.
As shown in the drawings, in which similar parts are designated by similar letters and numbers throughout the several views, my improved instrument is made up of the members A and B, pivoted together at 2, the member A consisting of a'handle portion 3 and a jaw 5 and the memberB consisting similarly of a handle portion 4 and a jaw 6. The jaw 5 is formed with a longitudinal slot 7, in which is pivoted the shank S of a plunger 9, adapted to t closely Within the receptacle or barrel 13, detachably secured to the jaw 6 in the manner hereinafter described. The jaw 6 is provided with a longitudinal slot 10, formed with an enlargement to receive the outlet-tube 11, extending from the bottom 12 of the cement receptacle or barrel 13. The tube l1 is made preferably slightly larger than the enlargement in the slot, so that When it is inserted therein the sides of the slot are sprung apart and hold it rmly in place by spring-pressure.
In use the barrel is lled with cement or other dental filling and secured to the jaw 6 by inserting its tube 11 into the enlargement of the slot l0 and forcing it through-until the bottom of the barrel rests against the inner side of the jaw 6. The jaws are then brought together until the plunger enters the barrel.
In this position the instrument is grasped by the handles and the tube inserted into the cavity to be filled until its orifice is near the bottom of the cavity. By gentle pressure upon the handles the cement is forced by the plunger through the tube and injected into the cavity, the instrument being gradually withdrawn as the cavity is being filled.
While I prefer to construct the instrument in the manner described, it is obvious that the construction and arrangement of the parts may be modified in various Ways Without departing from the principle of my invention, the scope of which is defined by the following claims.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. An instrument for filling dental cavities with cement and the like, comprising, in combination, two members suitably connected togethei', one member being formed with an open slot, a receptacle for dental fillings formed with a small outwardly-extending discharge-tube adapted for entrance into the cavity of a tooth, said tube fitting within said slot and held therein by the spring-pressure of the sides of the slot, and a plunger carried by the other member in position toenter the receptacle when the members are brought toget-her.
2. An instrument of the class described comprising, in combination, two members pivotally connected together, each consisting of a handle portion and a jaw, a receptacle connected with one of said jaws and formed with a small outwardly-extending outlettube, adapted for entrance into the cavity of a tooth, and a plunger carried by the other jaw in position to enter the receptacle as the jaws are brought together.
