P. H. BROWN.
DENTAL MOUTH OPENING PORGEPS. No. 390,561. Patented Oct. 2, 1888.

' 'NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDRIOK II. BROWN, OF LEBANON, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
DENTAL MOUTH-OPENING FORCEPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 390,561, dated October 2, 1888.
Application filed June 27, 1888. Serial No. 273,328. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDRIOK H. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lebanon, in the county of Grafton and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mouth-Opening Forceps for Dental Use; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon,
- which form a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to produce a simple and durable device for opening the mouths of dental patients, its use being especially convenient and important after the ad ministration of an antesthetie, when the operator should work quickly.
The nature of my invention will be described below, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is an end view. Fig. 2 is a perspective, the jaws being partly open.
Like letters refer to like parts.
A A are the handles, jointed or hinged together at a. This joint is well forward, thus giving a strong leverage to the handles. The said handles terminate at their forward ends in right-angular jaws B; but I do not limit myself to any particular shape or angle for the construction of the jaws. They should,
however, be cushioned at b with a combination of soft metal and rubber, or either one alone, for the obvious purpose of preventing the jaws from doing any injury to the teeth, &c. It is desirable to adjust the spread of the jaws. To this end a stop or set screw, (3, is passed through one of the handles, and by screwing it toward or away from the opposite handle the spread of the jaws B may be increased or diminished at will.
The operation is performed by simply placing the closed jaws between the teeth or jaws of the patient and bringing the handles A together, when the mouth will be forced open and kept so as long as desired, and without special effort, and where there is an assistant the operator is free to give his whole attention to his task.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A mouth-opening forcepsconsistingofthe jointed handles provided with terminal jaws approximately at right angles to the blades, saidjaws having outer cushions of some suitable soft snbstance, as set forth.
2. In a mouth-forceps, the combination, with the jointed handles having terminal jaws approximately at right angles to the blades and outer cushions of some suitable soft substance, of the stop or set screw for adjusting the spread of said jaws, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
