Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS J. AURAND, OF WATSEKA, ILLINOIS.
SCISSORS OR ISHIEARS.
SPECIFIGATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 688,280, dated December 10, 1901.
Application filed January 24, 1901. Serial No. 44,572. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. AURAND, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of I Watseka, in the county of Iroquois and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scissors or Shears, of which the following is aspecification.
My invention is an improvement on those scissors or shears which are constructed for shear-cutting, and particularly on those scissors or shears whose blades are provided with a ball-bearing.
My improvement consists in novel features of construction, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in Which-=- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the-link with its securing means. Fig. 2 .is an inside view of the blades separated. Fig. 3 is a plan view of my'improved scissors or shears. Fig. 4. is a transverse section taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3.
l is an inner blade formed with a thumbopening 2, with an enlargement 3 at one edge having a pivot-opening 4, with an ear 5 at the opposite edge having a pivot-opening 6 and a segmental ball-groovev 7 on its inner face concentric with the pivot-opening of the enlargement.
8 is an outer blade formed with a fingeropening 9,with an enlargement 10 at one edge, having a pivot-opening 11, with a segmental recess 12 at the opposite edge concentric with the pivot=opening of its enlargement, with a segmental ball-groove 13 on its inner face, registering with the ball-groove 7 of the inner blade, and a segmental depression 14; in the outer face, leaving a flat narrow bead 15 at the edge of the segmental recess and a flat boss 16 at its enlargement.
17 designates antifriction-balls adapted to run freely in the segmental ball-grooves.
Extending across the blades and bridging the depression 14 is a link 18, formed with a pivot-opening'19 at one end, registering with the pivot-openings of the enlargements and with a pivot-boxing 2O fitting in the segmental recess at the other end and having a pivotopening 21 registering with the pivot-open ing in the ear of the inner blade.
22 is a pivot screw or pin connecting one end of the link and the enlargements together and secured by means of a nut 23.
24. is a pivot screw or pin connecting the other end of the link by its boxing to'the ear of the inner blade and secured by means of a nut 25.
Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. Scissors or shears comprising an inner blade formed with an enlargement at one edge having a pivot-opening, with an car at the opposite edge having a pivot-opening, with a segmental ball-grooveon its inner face concentric with the pivot-opening of the enlarge= ment, an outer blade formed with an enlargement at one edge having a pivot-opem ing with a segmental recess at the opposite edge concentric with the pivot-opening of its enlargement, and with a segmental ballgroove on its inner face registering with the ball-groove of the inner blade, antifrictionballs located in the ball-grooves, a link extending across the blades, formed at one end with a pivotopening registering with the pivot-openings in the enlargements, and with a boxing at the other end fitting in the segmental recess and having a pivot-opening registering with the'pivot-openingin the ear, and pivots whereby the link is connected to the blades.
2 Scissors or shears comprising an inner blade formed with an enlargement. at one edge having a pivot-opening, with an car at the opposite edge having a pivot-opening, with a segmental ball-groove on its innerface concentric with the pivot-opening of the enlargement, an outer blade formed with an enlargement at one edge having a pivot-opening, with a segmental recess at its opposite edge concentric with the pivot-opening of its enlargement with a segmental ball-groove on its inner face registering with the ball-groove on the inner blade; and with a segmental depression in its outer face leaving a flat narrow bead at the edge of the segmental recess 10c and a fiat boss at its enlargement, antifricand pivots whereby the link is connected to tion-balls located in the ball-grooves, a link the blades. 1 extending across the blades, formed with a In testimony whereof I have aflixed my sigpivot-opening at one end registering with the nature in the presence of two witnesses.
5 pivot-openings of the enlargements and with THOS. J. AURAND.
a pivot-boxing at the other end fitting in the Witnesses: segmental recess and having a pivot-opening B. A. MAGGEE,
registering with the pivot-opening in the ear T. A. HIGGINS.
