J AMES YOGGM, JR., OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 68,826, dated September 10, 186.7. Y
IMPROVEMENT IN HANGER FOR SHAFIING. l
@Ligt tlgehulc rentrer tu initiate teitas atmt ma making tra titte samt.
TO ALLvWHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JAMES YocoM, Jr., of the city and county of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania,
' have invented an Improvement in Hangers for Shafting; and I do hereby declare that `the following is a full,
clear, and'exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawiugs,`making apart of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section through one form of hanger.
Figure 2 is a horizontal section through fig. I, taken at the point a:
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures. Y
This invention relates to a novel improvement on hangers for shafting, which are provided with set-screws for adjusting and properly setting the journal-boxes through which the shafting passes.
Hitherto the practice has been to drill and tap the holes' in the hangers-for the set-screws, but this is @found to be diihcult, for want of access to the parts to hedrilled, and for other reasons.
The nature of my invention consists in casting the hangers with screw-tapped wrought-iron nuts in them for receiving the adjusting set-screws, thus producing the hangers complete and ready for receiving said screws when taken from the moulds', as will be hereinafter described. l i.
To enable others skilled in the art to understand my invention, I will describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawings I have represented my invention applied to awell-known form of hanger,
but do not confine my invention to such form, as it is applicable to hangers orvbrackets of' various kinds which p require the use of set-screws for adjusting Vthe journal-boxes.
A represents a cast-iron hanger; B its journal-box; C C movablc'posts, which are fitted loosely into cylindrical sockets a a, and act-ed upon by the set-screws D D. The set-screws pass through wrought-iron nuts b Q, which are held fast in the ends ofthe socket portions a a, as shown in fig. 1.
l In making up the mould in which the bracket is to be cast, the wroughtdrou screw-tapped nuts b b are arranged and secured in place iu proper positions in this'mould, so-that when the hanger is cast said nuts will be embedded in the cast iron, and thus held firmly. The wrought-iron nuts being screw-tapped previously to arranging them in the mould, it will be seen that the hanger is complete and ready for receiving the setscrews D D. l p
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-f A hanger, which is constructed of cast metal with wrought-metal screw-tapped nuts for receiving the adjusting-screws, the cast metal being'made to surround the wrought nuts, substantially as described. i
