UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN F. SHAW, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO HENRY DISSTON dz SONS, INCORPORATED, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
SAW-HAN DLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 687,584, dated November 26, 1901.
Application filed August 29, 1900. Serial No. 2 14441 (N0 11105910 To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWIN F. SHAW, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Saw-Handles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in handles for saws, particularly for butchers saws; and the object of my invention is to make the handle substantial and so that moisture will not affect it.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side View of my improved handle, showing it attached to the back portion of a butchers saw. Fig. 2 is an end View. Fig. 3 is a section 011 the line 3 3, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing the parts of the handle detached, and Fig. 5 is a view of a modifica tion of my invention.
The handle shown in Fig. 1 has a body-section A, made in two parts A A and a handhold-section B, made in a single piece. The parts A A are hollow and made of pressed sheet-steel bent into the shape shown clearly in Fig. 4. Each piece has an extension 0. a, respectively, and flanges a ,-forming with the handhold B the eye a. The pieces are also flanged at a and the upper piece A is curved to fit the back 0 of a butchers saw. The back of the saw is secured between the flanges a and secured thereto by rivets c or screws, as desired. The upper and lower edges of the body-section are rounded as well as the portion around the eye, so as to give a smooth and neat appearance. The flanges a are discontinued at the extensions a. a, so that the cast-metal handhold-section B can be more readily fitted to the extensions.
The handhold-section is preferably made with an open center I) and has one or more strengthening-ribs b. The section B is secured to the body-section by rivets t or other fastening devices.
While I prefer to make the handhold-section of cast metal, it may be made in some instances by drop-forging, or may be made of Wood or composition without departing from the main feature of my invention.
The handle shown in the drawings is intended for a butchers saw, and in this case a handle made entirely of metal is preferred, owing to the fact that the entire saw with its handle can be sterilized.
When the handle is to be used on an ordinary wood-saw, the shape of the flanges a a will vary according to the type of saw to which the handle may be attached.
In Fig. 5 I have shown the body-section A made in a single piece, which can be struck up from one or more pieces, and the abutting edges welded or brazed, if desired.
I claim as my invention- 1. As a new article of manufacture, a sawhandle made of two sections, one section forming the body of the handle and stamped up from sheet metal and having rearward extensions and flanges around the eye of the handle, and depressed internal flanges at one end forming a recess for the back of the saw, the other section of the handle forming the handhold and secured to the rearward extension of the body-section, substantially as described.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a sawhandle made up of two sections, one a bodysection and the other a handhold-section, rearward extensions on the body-section to which the handhold-section is secured, the body-section being made in two parts, each part having internal flanges and having a flange to which the back of the saw is attached, substantially as described.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a sawhandle made up of two sections, one a bodysection and the other a handhold-section, said handhold-section being secured to rearward extensions of the body-section, the bodysection being made in two pieces, each piece struck up from sheet metal and having internal flanges around the eye of the handle and depressed flanges at the forward end forming a narrow recess for the back of the saw, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDWIN F. SHAW.
