Beit known that I, EDGAR J. HICKS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handsaws, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in handsaws; and the object of theinvention is to offset the handle laterally from the blade to permit of the free use of the latter close to walls, ceilings, or other obstructions which would not afford the necessary room for the sawyers hand between .the handle and the obstruction.

The invention also provides a raised handie, which when the saw is lying on the bench will enable the handle to be taken hold of readily, which is more convenient than where the saw-handle lies close down. In the latter case the saw not uncommonly is knocked off of the bench in the attempt to pick it up, especially if the workman is in a hurry.

I accomplish the objects of the invention by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a saw provided with my improvement; Fig. 2, a

back edge view of same, and Fig. 3 a view in perspective of the angle-plates which form the connection between the blade of the saw and the handle.

Similar letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.

A represents the saw-blade, which is of the usual material and form, and B is the handle, which, with the exception of the immediate portion which has heretofore been connected with the blade and was a kerfed extension to embrace the latter, but no longer needed, is the same as the handles heretofore used.

O and O are a pair of plates having two opposite right-angled bends to form the offset C2. The saw-blade A is inserted between the parts c and c of the plates and secured there by rivets, or preferably by threaded bolts and nuts cl3, which are projected through suitable openings in the plates. The parts c3 and c4 of the plates O and O have registering holes through `which screws or rivets cl2 are projected for the purpose of attaching the handle B to said plates in the manner as is clearly shown in the drawings. The plates may be made out of sheet-steel bent into shape, or they may be iron or other metal, and instead of being in two pieces they may be integral, with a bifurcated or kerfed portion to receive the blade of the saw, and this would probably be the preferred construction in case this connection between the blade and wooden handle were made out of malleable iron or brass, and inasmuch as the same general formation could be successfully producedin wood it is not desired to limit the invention to any specified material.

The saw may be sold with this improved handle complete, or the handle may be sold as an attachment to be applied to the blade of the common saw by removing the usual handle. For left -handed persons the handle would be set off on. the side opposite that shown in the drawings.

- Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim yas new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

1. vAs a new article of manufacture, a handsaw having the handle arranged transversely to the length of the blade in a plane parallel with the saw-blade but laterally removed therefrom to permit the hand to grasp the handle and operate the saw without touching the plane of the blade, substantially as described.

2. The combination, with a handsaw-blade anda handle arranged transversely to thc length of the blade of a connecting piece or pieces bywhich the blade and handle are joined together, said connecting-piece having a portion between said blade and handle, which is approximately at right angles to both, substantially as described and for the purposes specified.

3. As a new article of manufacture, a handsaw having a removable handle arranged transversely to the length of the blade and at one side of the plane of the blade, substantially as described and for the purposes specified.

4.. In a saw, a saw-blade, a pair of plates IOO between which the blade is fastened, said hand and seal, at Indianapolis, Indiana, this plates being irst bent laterally from the saW- 18th day of October, A.
