INDICATING DEVlCE FOR PNEUMATIC-TUBE CARRIERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. "687,270, dated November 26, 1901. Application filed July 10,1901, Serial No. 67,766. (No model.)
T at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. RODLIF'F, of Lowell, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Indicatin g Devices for Pneumatic-Tube Carriers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in carriers adapted for use in pneumatic-dc- IO spatch-tube apparatus; and its object is to provide an improved indicating device for indicating to the operator at the central station the station to which the carrier is to be sent.
, My invention consists of certain novel features hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate a construction embodying my invention, Figure 1 is a view of one end of a carrier; and Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 00 as, Fig. 1.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts throughout both views.
Within the shell A of the carrier is located the plate B, and resting on the flanges O of the shell A is a felt head D, and located within said head is plate E, which is secured to the plate B by bolts F. Resting on the plate E is a felt plug G, which fits within the head D, as shown, and resting on the end of the head D and plug G is a plate H, having a series of characters or marks corresponding to the stations in the pneumatic system. This plate is secured in place by bolts K,
which secure and hold together the plate B and plate H and intermediate parts. In addition to the bolts K the pins L, placed in recesses in the head D and riveted to the plate H, prevent rotation of said head and hold said plate firmly in position. In the plate H rests anotherplate L, of smaller diameter than the plate H and having a pointer L, and against said plate L is located a movable head M, and within said head M is located the plate N, which is held within said head by the plate 0 and nut O, which holds said head M in place on the plate H. The plate L is provided with pins 1?, riveted to the plate L and passing upwardly through the head into the plate N, and by means of these pins the 56 plate L, with the pointer L, and the head M move together. Within the head Mis located a plug Q, which covers the plate N, the ends of the bolt 0, and the ends of the pins P. When it is desired to send a carrier to a certain station, the head M is rotated, and with it moves the plate L and pointer L until it rests opposite the character which represents the station to which the carrier is to be sent, and the carrier is then inserted into the (le- 60 spatch-tube for transmission.
A carrier provided with a number of characters to indicate a corresponding number of stations in the system may be used for sending parcels or messages to any one of the stations in the system, as it is only necessary for the person sending the original parcel or message to adjust the pointer to indicate the desired station before sending the carrier to the central station. 76
' I do not limit myself to the arrangement and construction shown, as the same may be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus ascertained the nature of my 7 5} invention and set forth a construction embodying the same, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is- 1 I l. Inacarrier for pneumatic-despatch-tube 8o apparatus, a fixed head on said carrier, a series of characters corresponding to the stations in the system located on said fixed head, means for holding said characters and said fixed head together, and a movable head with a pointer for indicating one of said characters, for the purpose set forth. 7
2. In a carrier for pneumatic-despatch-tube "apparatus, a fixed head on said carrier, aseries of characters corresponding to the stao tions in the system located on said fixed head, means for holding said characters and said fixed head together, and a movable head provided with means for indicating one of said characters for the purpose set forth. 5
3. In a carrier for pneumatic-despatch-tube systems, a fixed head, a plate secured to said fixed head and having on its upper face a series of characters corresponding to the stawith an index-finger and movable with said tions in the system, means for holding said head, and means forholding said plate carry- '15 fixed head and plate on the carrier, and a movin g the index-finger in its relation to the mov able head with a pointer for indicating one of able head.
5 said characters for the purpose set forth. In testimony whereof I have signed my at. I11acarrierforpneumatic-despatch-tube name to this specification, in the presence of systems, a fixed head, a plate secured to said two subscribing Witnesses, this 26th day of 20 fixed head and having on its upper face ase- June, A. D. 1901. riesof characters corresponding to the sta I0 tions in the system, means for holding said WVILLIAM RODLIFF' fixed head and plate on the carrier, means for \Vitnesses: retaining said plate in its position on the E. L. HARLOW, fixed head, a movable head, a plate provided A. L. MEssER.
