To whom it concem:
' Be it known that I, J AMES WATSON MAU- PIN, a citizen of the-United States, residing at Stuarts Draft, in the county of Augusta 5 and Stateof Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rural-i Carriers"ltouting'Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of tlie invention, such as will enableothers'skilled in the artto which it apperta'ins to make and use'the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. w
' This invention relates to new and useful improvements in routing devices for rural mail delivery and comprises a simple and efficient device of this nature having various 2() details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 2, and
. Fig. 4: is a sectional view on lineH of geference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A desi nates a plate from which rises a standard 6 having 3 serrations 0 upon the inner face thereof.
' Said plate has a dove-tailed slot or recess F formed in the upper surface thereof. in which an adjustable dove-tailed block H is mounted. A screw I is fitted in an aperture 40 in said block and adapted to engage a threaded aperture in the plate J mounted in the b'ottomof said recess, affording means whereby the block may be held in difierent adjusted positions. Rising from the block is a standard B with serrations D upon the inner face thereof, said standard being vertically disposed with its inner edge parallel to the adjacent edge of the standard 0. A x follower, designated by letter N, is recessed t NBto-redeive the two standards and Qided by said standards asthe follower is 'rai ed and lowered. A block Q is provided ch has slotted ends Q adapted to receive sa d) standards and said block has horizontal.
slots R in which the flanges S of the casings S are adapted to be guided, said casings specification of Letters Tatent: v Patented Sept. 3, 1912- I Application filed May 7, 1912. Serial No. 695,789.}
contai'ning a spring-pressed pawl T. By the provision of this particular detailed conjusted' dilierent'distances from each other and the pawls accordingly so-that they may engage the notches'upon the adjacent edges of the standard.
It 'will be noted that each slot in the block carries a spring-pressed pawl, each being adapted, to engage teeth upon the adjacent standard. Said block Q, is provided with a central aperture for the reception of the knob W at the top of said pin is adapted to limit the upper movement of said block.
A spring X is mounted upon said pin and' interposed between the-follower and block and serving to hold the follower under pressure against the articles of mail beneath.
The operation of my device will be readily understood and is' as follower-The space between the standards being adjusted to desired width, the papers, letters and other 0 articles of mail are placed between the standards and the follower is placed upon Figure l is a side elevation of my device.
the standards in the manner shown in Fig.
1. By pressing down upon the block,'the followenwill compress the articles into-ass compact pile intermediate the standards, the pawls engaging the ratchet teeth or serrations upon the adjacent edges of the stand ards, thus securely holding the mail in a compact form. As the follower is held yieldingly'against the pile'of articles of mail, when one article is withdrawn, the resiliency of the spring will cause the follower to hold the other articles securely in place.
By the particular construction shown, it will be noted that the apparatus may be'adjuste'd to different widths to accommodate letters, parcels and other articles.
' lVhat I claim to be new is 1. A routing device for rural mail carriers, comprising a plate, a fixed and an adjustable standard mounted thereon andeach provided with serrations upon their/ adjacent edges, a follower with slotted e s y adapted to engage said standards, a b ock, a spring interposed between the same and the follower, and dogs carried by the block and adapted to engage said teeth, assetforth.
2. A routing device for rural mail carriers, comprising a plate, a fixed and an adjustable standardmounted thcreonand each struction of mounting the casing, itwill beefuu'clerstood that the standards may be 'adpin P which. rises from the follower and a 70 3. A routing device for rural mail ear riers, comprising a plate, a fixed and an ad justable standard mounted thereonand'eaeh provided. withserrations upon their adja- I cent edges, a follower with slotted ends adapted to engage said standards, a. pin pro- 1.5 jectiug from the, follower, a block through "which said pin projects, a spring interposed between the block and follower, and dogs adjlistably held upon said block and adapted'to engage said teeth, as set forth. a
' 4. A routing device for rural mail carriers, comprising a plate, a fixed and an adjustable standard mounted thereon and each provided with serrations upon their adj aeent edges, a follower with slotted ends adapted to'engage said standards, a pin projecting from the (follower, a block through which said pin projects, a spring interposed be-- tween the block and follower, spring-pressed dogs, casings in which the same are. mounted, and projections upon said casing movable in slots upon said block, as set forth. 5.. A routing device Tor'rufalmail car- 'riersfco'inprising a plate, a fixed and an ad- 4 ustable standard mounted thereon and each providedwith serrations upon their adjacent edges,- a follower with slotted ends adapted to engage said standards, a pinproject-ing from the follower, a block havingan' aper lure-therein for. the FOG-option of said pin, a
spring interposed between the-block and fol 40 lower, a knob upon the pin, saidv blockhaving slots therein, a casing m a l in ea h slot, and a spring-pressed'dog in each casing, as set forth.
