WIRE SNOW-GUARD.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 686,830, dated November 19, 1901.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, STEPHEN T. NAKASH- JIAN, of the city and county of W'orcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire Snow- Guards; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings,forminga part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a front view of said improved wire snow-guard. Fig. 2 is a side view thereof. Fig. 3 is a rear View with the upper end broken off, and Fig. 4 is a top or plan view of the snow-guard.

The object of my invention is to provide a wire snow-guard made from a single piece of wire and having a combined snow-stop and brace. It consists in combining with the usual shank,having a drive-point at its upper end, said combined snow-stop and brace at its opposite end, made by bending the wire in the form of a horizontal loop projecting from said shank in the opposite direction from the drive-point, then extending over the wire at the foot of the shank, where the loop commences, thence down a short distance, thence forward and up and united with the loop at about the center of its outer end to form a brace therefor, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

To enable others to better understand the nature and purpose thereof, I will now proceed to describe it more in detail.

In the drawings, A represents the shank; B, the drive-point; O, the loop forming the snow stop, and D the brace therefor. The shank and drive-point are substantially the same as in other single-wire snow-guards, and my improvement therefore relates to the base or snow-stop part of the device. The loop 0 is made, as usual, by bending the wire around horizontally in the form of an eye, the same projecting in the opposite direction to the drive-point B. The Wire after being bent around to form the aforesaid loop is next passed over the wire at a at the foot of the shank, then down a short distance and preferably back a little, as shown at b, then forward and up, as shown at c, and finally united with the loop at about the center of its outer end, as is shown at (Z.

By the above construction it is obvious that the loop G and part c of the brace D form the snow-stop and the parts I) and 0 form said brace under said loop. A simple and effective wire device is thus produced which may serve not only as a snow-guard, but also for a staging-hook in slating or shingling. I find in practice that a device thus made, with the brace D constructed in the manner described, will easily bear the weight of a man without bending even when made of the ordinary size of wire used for snow-guards; but it is designed in practice to use a larger size of wire when the devices are made especially for staging-hooks.

Where the end of the wire unites with the outer end of the loop, said loop may simply rest on the end of said wire, or it may be hooked around the wire of the loop, as is shown in the drawings.

Having now described my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-=- The shank having the drive-point at one end, in combination with a combined snowstop and brace at its opposite end made by bending the wire in the form of a horizontal loop projecting from said shank inthe opposite direction from the drive-point; then extending over the wire at the foot of the shank where the loopcommences; thence down a short distance; thence forward and up and uniting with the loop at about the center of its outer end, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
