Bc it known that I, ROBERT CB. NVENS, of Lowell, in'the county `o" Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements `in Spring-Bed Bottoms, of which the following is a full, v clear, and exactdescription,irefercnce being had tothe accompanying drawings, making part ot' this speciiica-` tion, in which- -V Figure 1 isa longitudinal vertical section of a bedsteadwith my improvements applied thereto. My invention and improvement in spring bed-bottoms con-sists in the employment of longitudinal spring-` `l i hars A at each side ther-cof, combined with transverse connecting and supporting bars 1BV placed near the ends l and on the tops of` said spring-bars, and arranged to support and maintain in position for use any ordinary l spring or yielding slats, C, when tho saidspr'ingbars are hung on stirrups D, the top endsot` which grasp or hook on to the top edges orstop sides of the Side rails E of the bedstead, and the bottom ends hook under and` i hold the spring-bars'up in their places, i y v i l My invention and improvements can be readily applied to almost any kind of bedsteads; but bedsteads 'which have square-edged side rails form better and firmer supports for the stirrups D., which are made to slide from near the middle of each rail to the extreme ends.V I generally employ two of these sliding stirrups on" f lcnfch of the side railslof the lndsteads. 'Between the .two stirrups,'and fastened to the inside of each side rail E, I employ a knee, F, shown in figs. 1, 2, and 3. Each of these knees bears on the top side` of one of the spring-burs at the centre or about the centre of the length ofthe side rails, whilethe stirrups hold`eael1 springf i i bar up in position, so that if weight isplaced oneither corner ofthis spring-bed bottom the stiriup nearest the weighted corner acts as a. fulcrum, and the knee on the top of the spring-bar takes theload, or the effect ofthe weight, and `prevents any unfavorable action being produced on anyother part of the-springbed bottom so arranged and supported. If weight is un'eqnally applied to this improved spring-bed bottom, `as by one` light ff person and one heavy person occupying the bed' at the sume time, the stirrups at that side of the bed occupied i by the heavy person arc very conveniently slid or moved outward tovvards the 4corner posts Gr or to the extremeV ends of the spring-bars, as shown at D2 infig. 2, While the stirrups at the side of the bed occupied by thlightV person remain near .the middle of the rail E, as s hownat D in figs. 4l and 2. Y 0r `if one or two heavy persons u occupy the bed all the stirrups may be moved outward or all remain `'near' the middle' of `the rails. So,'where i two light persons or two persons of nearly equal weight pccupy the bed at the somo time, the stirrups maybe l. in the same or nearly the samepositien or place opposite eachother, or in any other `place on either rail, according to the amount of yielding or springing o1' elastic action required 'or'desired byleither occupant ofthe p bed for his or her comfort -or convenience, or to render rest or sleep more agreeable or :pleasant and beneficial. i l It' will therefore be readily sc en and understood that any reasonable a'rnountfof yielding or springingcr elastic action mayib'e' hadin'my improved spriug-bed bottom, either at the middle, or at the ends and the middle, or` at i one side and not the other, at each or either corner equally or unequally, or on any part ofthe same, simply by.,` sliding the stirrups to the place or position required. l What I claim as new, and dosireto secure byLetters Patent, isv 1 I. I claim the adjustable sliding strrups D, 0r their equivalent, applied to the siderailsE and spring-bars i A, and arranged for action and effect substantially in the manner and for `the purpose set forth. 2. And in combination with the stirrups D, I claim the knees F, or thel equivalent thereof, when applied: and arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth. f i i 3.
