Application led May 16, 1901. Seria1'No.60,-457. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, MICHAEL JOYCE, a citizen of the United States, and a residentof Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented a new and Improved Sad-Iron, of vwhich the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a sad-iron having certain peculiar features of construction by means of which the handle may be attached to or detached from the iron at will, so that one handle will serve for a number of irons and need not be placed upon the lire with the irons when they are being heated.l
This specification is a specific description of one form of the invention, while the'claim is a definition of the actual scop'e thereof.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a longitudinal section of the invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the base. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan View on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1 to show one of the bars which are attached to the handle, and Fig. 4 is a fragmentary rear elevation.
The base a is preferably constructed of two horizontal sections fastened together by screws or other devices at. Formed in the top of the base is a longitudinal groove a2, having at its front end an undercut a3, forming an overhanging portion, as indicated in the drawings. At the rear end of the groove CL2 undercuts a4 are formed, these undercuts producing overhanging portions at the point mentioned. At the bottom of the groove a2 is a cavity d5 for a purpose which will be hereinafter described b indicates the handle of the iron, which has secured to its lower ends two bars c and d. These bars are rigidly secured to the handle and are separated by non-conducting blocks c, preferably of asbestos, so that the heat from the iron will not be transmitted to the handle. The bar CZ is formed of metal,
preferably malleable'iron, While the bar c is of Wood or other non-conducting material, so as to protect the hand from the heat of the iron. The bar CZ is formed at its front end with a reduced portion d', adapted to engage in the undercut a3, and at its rear end with lateral reduced projections d2, adapted, respectively, to engage in the undercut portions a4. By sliding the bar d forwardly through the groove. a2 it may be properly seated.
f indicates a latch which is mounted on the bard and has its nose or bill projected through an opening in the bar, so as to engage in the cavity a5 of the base a, and thus hold the bar ol, with its attached parts, securely in place. The bar (Z has a T-shaped groove or cavity d3, receiving the dog, and the dog conforms to the shape of this groove. The transverse part or T-head of this dog forms a pivot 0n which it swings. The dog is pressed into operative position byaspring g, fastened on the top of the bar. Y
h indicates a thumb-knob which is attached to the catch f and which extends through the bar c to facilitate manipulating the catch.
The use and advantages of my invention will be fully understood by persons skilled in the art,and it is not necessary to explain them here. e
Various changes in the f'orin, proportions, and minordetails of my invention maybe re- -sorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. Hence I consider myself entitled to all such variations as may lie within the scope of my claim.
Having thus .described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secureby Letters Patent-- A sad-iron, comprising a body portion having a groove formed in its top, said groove having undercut walls, a handle, two parallel bars arranged one above the other and spaced apart, the bars being secured to the bottom of the handle and the lower bar having projections lying in the undercut walls ofr the groove in the body, the lower bar also having a T-shaped groove formed in its top `and an opening located at one end of the said T-shaped groove and extending through the bar, `a dog set in the groove and conforming to the shape thereof, the transverse part or Tshaped head of said dog forming a pivot and the bili 0E the dog at the opposite end name to this specification in the presence of extending through the opening in the lower two subscribingwitnesses. bar, whereby to engage the body, a. spring pressing the dog downward, and a, thumb- 5 knob located over` the upper bar and con- Witnesses:
nected with the dog. MARGARET STUART, In testimony whereof I have signed my JENNIE EDWARDS.
