UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES II. MOKENDRICK, OF HOLMES, PENNSYLVANIA.
PAPER RECEPTACLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 685,789, datedNovember 5, 1901. Application filed October 11, 1900- Serial No. 32,683. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES H. McKnNDRIcK, of .IIolmes, in the county of Delaware and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Receptacles, whereof the following is a specifi cation, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a paper receptacle comprising a permanently shaped and seamed tubularbody, a closed bottom arranged to fold flat with said body, and a handle arranged to lie flat with said body and permanently secured at the top thereof.
As hereinafter described, myinvention pro vides a paper receptacle which may be totally collapsed when empty and which can be stored and shipped with the same facility as a fiat sheet of paper, but which is permanently shaped and seamed to form a closed-bottomed bag having at its top a complete handle, by which it may be carried.
I am aware that hitherto paper receptacles have been made which are shipped from the manufacturer in blank sheet form and which must be assembled into a satchel form by the operator when desired for use, and it is to be noted that my present device is diiferentiated from the prior art in that it may be manufactured and delivered to the consumer in complete form ready for use, with the advantage that no manipulation whatever is required on the part of the user.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a convenient embodiment of my invention open ready to be filled with merchandise. Fig. 2 is a view of the receptacle similar to Fig. 1, except that it is closed, with the handles in position to be grasped. Fig. 3 is a face view of the form of my invention shown in Figs. 1 and 2 folded fiat to be stored or shipped. Fig. 4 is a face view of the flat blank sheet from which the receptacle shown in the preceding figures is permanently shaped and seamed. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary sectional view of the handle portion of the receptacle shown in the preceding figures. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary sectional view similar to Fig. 5, showing a modified construction.
In said figures, A is the bag-body,arranged to form a tube having sides a a a a.
B is theclosed bottom, comprising the folds H19 22. 6
The handles 0 (shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 5) consist of bights c, pasted or otherwise permanently seamed, inclosing the reinforcingstrips 0. 0 represents cut-out flaps in the respectively opposite sides of the bag-body be I neath said handles, which permit the fingers of the user to be inserted beneath both handles from either side thereof and which flaps when upturned, as indicated in Fig. 5, serve to hold the opposed handles together In the form of myinvention shown in Fig. 6 the handles 0' are formed by wrapping the upper-flap edges 0 of the bag-body around the reinforcing-stripsc in one direction and wrapping the flaps 0 (cut from beneath the handles) around the latter in the opposite direction, the respective flaps being pasted or otherwise permanently secured.
As hereinbefore described, the satchel-bag may be manufactured and delivered to the consumer in fiat form, as shown in Fig. 3, which form is best adapted for shipping and storing, and the flatly-collapsed bag being complete, as aforesaid, may be instantly opened by the user into the form shown in Fig. 1 without any manipulation whatever. The open receptacle shown in Fig. 1 may be filled with merchandise, closed, as shown in Fig. 2, and be instantly ready for transportation.
I do not desire to limit myself to the precise construction which I have shown and described, as it is obvious that various modifications may be made therein without departing from the essential features of my invention.
I claim- 1. A flexible receptacle provided atits mouth witha handle in integral relation with the body of the receptacle; and a flap cut from said body beneath said handle and arranged to reinforce said handle, substantially as set forth.
2. A flexible receptacle provided at its mouth with a handle in integral relation with the body of the receptacle; and a flap cut from said body beneath said handle, arranged to reinforce said handle and to fasten the mouth of said receptacle in closed position,
substantially as set forth.
3. A flexible receptacle provided with two other and to fasten the mouth 0t said rece'p 7 handles at its mouth disposed in parallel retacle in closed position, substantially as set a lation upon respectively opposite sides of forth.
said mouth in integral relation with the body JAMES H. MCKENDRICK. 5 of the receptacle; and respective flaps cut Witnesses:
from said body beneath said handles; said ARTHUR E. PAIGE,
flaps being arranged to register with each i E. L. FULLERTON.
