CARRYING HANDLE FOR' CONTAINERS Filed March 23, 1935 a ber E/NAR G. M0
ATTozA/E Ygl Cal Patented Sept. 21, 1937 UNITED STATES mam PATENT OFFIQE Commander-Larabee Corporation, Minneapolis, Minn., a corporation of Maryland Application March 23, 1935, Serial No. 12,636
2 Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in bag closures and more particularly to a bag closure having means therein to facilitate carrying the container.
An object of the present invention is to provide a bag closure having a carrying handle permanently embodied in the construction thereof.
A further object is to permanently secure a plate element in position between the folded walls of the bag top, having a carrying handle secured thereto.
A further object is to provide a carrying means for small paper bags whose top wall portions are folded inwardly over the bag body, one over the other, to seal the bag, which comprises a plate element permanently secured in position between the folded wall portions of the bag mouth and having a carrying handle secured thereto.
Other objects of the invention will appear from the following description and accompanying drawing and will be pointed out inthe annexed claims.
In the accompanying drawing there has been disclosed a structure designed to carry out the various objects of the invention, but it is to be understood that the invention is not confined to the exact features shown as various changes may be made within the scope of the claims which follow.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the invention embodied in the construction of a sealed bag top;
Figure 2 is a perspective view showing the walls of the bag top folded to receive the plate element, and indicating portions thereof gummed;
Figure 3 is a similar view showing the, plate element positioned upon certain of the folded wall portions before the final operation of securing it in position in the bag top;
Figure 4 is a plan view of the carrying means removed from the bag; and
Figure 5 is an enlarged detail sectional view p on the line 55 of Figure 4.
as staples 6. The terminals ll] of the inwardly turned portions 5 are offset or bent at right-angles to the axes of the portions 5, thereby to permanently secure the handle 3 to the element 2, as best shown in Figure 5. I
The invention is particularly designed for use in connection with bag tops which are closed by folding the wall portions thereof inwardly over the bag body, one over the other, and suitably securing them together in sealing relation.
Figure 2 illustrates the initial operation of folding the bag top walls into closing relation to receive the plate element 2, wherein the end walls 1 are shown folded inwardly, one over the other, and suitably secured together by such means as gumming, not shown. The plate element 2 is then seated upon the folded end walls I, as shown in Figure 3, after which the side wall flaps 8 are folded inwardly over the plate element 2, as shown in Figure 4, thereby permanently securing the element in position between the folds of the bag top, as will readily be understood. The flaps 8 previously are gummed, as indicated at 9 in Figures 2 and 3, whereby one of said flaps is secured directly to the upper surface of the plate element 2, and the other flap to the upper surface of the first folded flap 8. The bag-carrying means herein disclosed is very simple in construction and may readily be inserted between the wall portions of the bag 9 top, when said wall portions are folded into closing and sealing relation. When the bag closure is completed as shown in Figure 1, the plate element 2 and carrying handle 3 are permanently secured to the bag top, whereby the filled bag may 3 be conveniently carried about by grasping the handle 3. The staples 6 provide means whereby the handle may be folded against the top of the bag to permit packing and storing, as when the bags are crated or boxed for shipment.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a paper bag whose upper wall portions cooperate to provide the mouth of the bag and are adapted to be folded inwardly over the contents of the bag body and secured together to close the bag mouth, a single fiat plate element secured in position between said folded wall portions and having portions of its ends exposed at opposite ends of the closed bag top, and a carrying handle secured to the exposed portions of said element, said folded wall portions being so arranged that the carrying handle may be secured to the element without the provision of. apertures or openings in said folded wall portions.
2. In a paper bag whose upper wall portions define the mouth of the bag, a pair of said walls element and suitably secured together, and being folded inwardly over the contents of the whereby end portions of said element are exbag body whereby the remaining walls provide posed, and a carrying handle secured to the exoppositely disposed triangular flaps, a flat plate posed portions of said element.
5 element positioned on said first folded wall portions, and said flaps being folded over said plate EINAR G. M0.
