PHOTOGRAPHIC PRINTING APPARATUS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 685,432, dated October 29, 1901.

Be it known that I, ARTHUR Prcknnua subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Harrogate, in the county of York, England, have invented a new and useful Photographic Printing Out Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in apparatus for printing photographs from negatives, the object being mainly to provide a frame or apparatus in which the print is held securely in contact with the negative during the process and in which ihe said print is readily accessible for examination during the process.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation, and Fig. 2 a side elevation, of one form of my invention. Fig. 3 is horizontal section on the line A B of Figs. 1 and 2, and Fig. 4: is a perspective view of a modified form of my invention.

According to my said invention I employ in place of the usual wooden frame and hinged back a flexible back a, made of sheet metal, celluloid, or other suitable opaque flexible material. This flexible back a may be of a size approximately equal to that of the negative b to be printed from, and it may have, if desired, a lining c, of cloth, felt, or other soft fabric. The lower edge of the flexible back a is turned over, forming a clip d to receive the negative I) and print c, and the said flexible back a is made of a curved or bent shape, so that its upper part tends to spring or curl away from the negative I) and print 6 when the latter are in position Within the clip (1. The opposite or upper edge of the flexible back a may have a suitable bend or roll f to exclude the light from the print e at that point.

When the printing-out paper c has been inserted between the negative 1) and the springback a, the back may then be sprung to the print and negative and may be retained or fastened in that position by slides, clips, or other suitable device. One form of such fastening device which I prefer to employ is shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 and consists of a Serial No. 59,560. (No model.)

If a suitably-shaped opening t' be formed in the frame 9 and the positions be reversed, so that the negative faces the said opening a, a vignette-print is produced. To examine the print, the slide may be partly Withdrawn, when the spring-back a will curl away from the negative I; and expose the upper part of the print e.

Another suitable arrangement is shown in Fig. 41:. In this case a projecting clip 7c is formed on the spring-back a itself, the said clip is being sprung over the upper edges of the negative I) and print 6, which are thus retained in close contact, the print at the same time being readily accessible for inspection. The said clip 7; serves also to exclude the light from the upper edge of the print 6.

hat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. I11 aphotograph-printin g frame,the combination, with a normally-curved back plate of resilient material provided at one end with a hooked portion for engaging with the negative, of means for holding the whole of the said back plate in proximity to the negative, substantially as set forth.

2. Inaphotograph-printingframe,thecom bination, with a normally-curved back plate of resilient material provided at one end with a hooked portion for engaging with the negative,-of a holder provided with straight grooves in which the said back plate and negative are slidable, said holder operating to retain the whole of the said plate in proximity to the negative, substantially as set forth.
