To all whom it may concern Be it known that I. ALFRED E. Knrsnn. citizen of the United States residin at Seattle. in the county of King and tate of Vashington, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Photographic- Pri'nting hlachines, of which the following a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in photographic printing machines, and the object of my invention is to provide a photographic printing machine which shall be adapted for use in the operation of printing on sensitized sheet material photographic pictures from negatives of such pictures, and which shall embody operative clamping means for quickly clamping a negative with an even pressure between the surface of the sensitized sheet, upon which the picture'is to be printed, and the flat surface of one side of a transparent plate whose other side maybe exposed to rays of light of an associated lamp without wrinkling either said negative. or said sensitized sheet material.
1 accomplish this object by devices illustrated in the accompanyingv drawings wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of a photographic printing machine embodying my invention as it appears when a sensitized sheet is clamped in a position to be printed;

Referring to the drawings, throughout which like reference numerals indicate like parts, a table board 10 is disposed to serve as a greater portion of the top wall of a box whose rearward vertical wall 11 is shown in Figs. 1 and 7 by full lines and the top edges of the outer side of whose vertical side walls 12 and 13 are indicated partly by full lines, and partly by broken lines in said Figs. 1 and T, and the top edge of the outer side of whose front wall 14 is indicated by a broken line in said Figs. 1. and 7, said rearward wall 11, front wall 11 and the side wall 13 being more clearly shown in Fig. 2.
The rearward vertical wall 11 projects upwardly higher than the top ends of the side walls 12 and 13 and the front wall 14, as shown more clearly in Fig. 2, and the two opposite end edge portions and the front edge portion of the table board 10 all extend mitwardly beyond the outer edges of the ends of the side walls 12 and 13 and the outer edge of the front wall 14: as indicated in Figs. 1 and 7 Disposed between the rearward. wall 11 and the inner edge of the table board 10 is a thinner and narrower board 15 which extends between the outer edges of the vertical side walls 12 and 13 to serve as a lesser portion of the top wall of said box.
As shown more clearly in Figs. 2 and 7 the table board 10 is provided with a reetangular opening 16 extending downwardly therethrough, the side and end surfaces of the *alls of said opening 16 being provided each with a narrow cleat 17 that is spaced from the top surface of the table board 10 for a distance equal to the thickness of a glass plate 18 which is removahly disposed to rest on the top surface of said cleats 17, whereby the top surface of said glass plate 18 registers with the top surface of the table board 1 Adjacent to the rearward edge of the glass plate 18 and nearer the left hand edge thereof, as indicated in Fig. 7, a rectangular portion 19 of the area of said glass plate is clearly transparent while the bottom surface of the entire remaining portion of the area thereof is made to be opaque by the means of a coating of black paint through which rays of'light cannot 35185.

Between the rearward edge of the opening 16 and the board 15 a portion of the table board 10 is excavated to form a rectangular recess within which is disposed a separate board 20 that fits therein.
The top surface of said board is provided with a recess 21 that extends through out its length, the form of which recess 21 in crosssection is shown in Figs. 2. 3 and A larger rearward portion of the board 20 and a larger rearward portion of the re cess 21 is covered. by a plate 22 of thin sheet metal ofthe form in area shown in Fig. 7.
The smaller forward portion of the recess 21 and the forward top portion of the board 20 is covered by a plate 23, of thin sheet metal, of the form and area shown in Fig. i", said plate 23 being riveted to the front end portion of a lever 24 which is fulcrnmed by a ll shaped portion 25 in a depression formedin thebottom of the recess 21., as shown in Fig. 3, the rearward end of said lever 24 being provided with a button 26 which is disposed to project upwardly through the rearward portion of tie plate 22, whereby a depression'of said button 26 will raise/the plate 23, thus to permit the rearward edge portion of a photographic negative, not shown, to be disposed to be clamped to the top surface of the glas plate 18 over the rearward e('lge portion of which projects spaced 'iarts 2. 28., 29. and 30 of the plate 23 asshown in "Fig. i.
To the under side ofthe plate 23 is also riveted the front end portions of two flat springs 31 and 32 whose rearward end por tions are fastened to the top surface of the rearward portion of the board 20, as indicated. in Fig. 4, which flat springs 31 and 32 serve as spring hinges that tend nor mally to pressthe plate 23 forcibly downwardto cause its spacedparts 27, 28, 29 and 30 to clamp said photographic negative in its correct position on the glass plate 18.
' Hinged hinges and 34 to the rearward portion ofthe table board 10 is a platen board 35 which is adapted to swing between its position, shoii-'n'in Fig. 2. and its position. shown in Fig. 1, in which latter position it may press a piece of'sensitized photographic paper, not shown, evenly on to a photographic negative, not shown,
that is clamped by the spaced parts 27, 28, 29 and 30 in its proper position over the transparent portion 4 of the glass plate 18.
Like the hinge 34 shown in Fig. 8,'both the hinges 33 and 34 are made to be yielding by reason of the fastening screw 36 not being screwed into the table board 10 to its fullest eXtent,'whereby the platen board '35 may find an even seat on the top surface of said table board 10 and glass plate 18.
The engaging side of the platen board 35 is covered with, one piece of soft textile fabric 37 throughout its whole area, and throughout that portion of its area which engages with the entire area of the glass plate 18 another piece of like-soft textile fabric 38 is adhered to the fabric 37 thereby to provide a soft engaging surface with whichto press against a piece of sensitized photographic paper to clamp said paper on to a negative disposed on the glass plate 18.
Adjacent to the inner side surface of the fabric 37, the platen board'35 is'provided with two recesses 39 and 40 indicated in Fig.
6, which extend in a transverse direction to intersect a longitudinal slot 41 that extends through the platen board '35 to the outer side thereof throughout a distance equal to the lengths of the plates22 and 23 andin a position registering with said plates 22 and 23. r
Extending from'the left hand end of'said slot 41 at a right angle therefrom, in a direction towardthe front edge of said'platen boar-d235, is a slotted groove 42, as indicated in Fig.6.
The fabrics 3'7 and 38'over the slots 41 and 42 are provided with a slit, and freely disposed in said slots 41 and-42 is an angular clamping member of the form shown by an enlarged perspective view in Fig. 9 made of thin sheet metal, the longer and wider portion 43 being disposed'to project through the slot 41 to a distance therefrom and to the outwardly projecting edge portion of said portion 43 is fastened a wooden strip 44 of semicircular crosssection against which one may press to move the clamping member inwardly in opposition two flatsprings 45 and 46, like ends of which project into oblong holes 47 and 48, respectively, which extend though said longerand wider portion 43, the other ends of said flat springs 45 and 46 being fastened near the rearward edge of the platen board 35, as'indicated in Fig. 2,said springs'nor- 'rnally maintaining said clamping member the longer and wider portion 43 is provided with .integral spaced clamping tongues 51, 52, and 53 which extend at right angles therefrom, as shown in Figs. 2 and 9, which clamping tongues serve to clamp a piece of sensitized photographic paper, not shown, against the surface of the fabric 38 in a position to adapt it to engage with a negative disposed on the transparent portion of the glass plate 18, in response to the action of the flat springs 45 and -16.
The tongues 51, 52 and 53 are narrower than the spaces between the spaced parts 27 and 28, the spaced parts 28 and 29 and between the spaced parts 29 and respectively, and said tongues 51, 52 and 53 are so respectively disposed that when the platen board 85 is swung downwardly into its position as shown in Fig. 1. then they fall into respective spaces thereby slightly crimping the edge portion of the sensitized paper, not shown, firmly to hold it in its p oper position' on the negative, not shown, that is disposed on the transparent portion of the glass plate 18, said sensitized paper being at the same time pressed against said glass plate 18 by fabric 28 in an obvious manner. 1
Extending obliquely downward from the top of the rearward wall 11. to the board as shown more clearly in Fig. is a bumper board against which the wooden strip "i -i may rest when the platen board is e in the position shown in Fig. 2 thus to press inwardly the clamping member to disengage its tongues 51, 52 and 53 from the fabric 38 thereby to permit the insertion of a piece of sensitized photographic paper that is to be printed.
Vithin the box formed by the vertical walls l1, 12, 13 and 14 is placed an electric lamp, not shown, whose rays of light may project upwardly through the transparent portion of the glass plate 18, and through any neg ive. that may be placed thereon, to impinge on a piece of sensitized paper disposed on said negative thereby to print the picture of said negative on said sensitized paper in a well known manner.
To utilize a photographic printing machine that embodies my invention in the manner illustrated and described. the laten board is disposed as shown in ig. 2, whereitipmi the button 26 is depressed to raise the plate 23, then a negative is disposed on the transparent portion of the glass plate .8 with its rearward edge portion under the spaced parts 27,28, 29 and 3d, and there upon the button 26 is released to permit said spaced parts 27, 28, 29 and 30 to clamp said negative in its proper position on said gl ass plate 18.

Obviously, for negatives of different dimensions, glass plates of the same size but having transparent portions of proper different dimensions may be substituted for the glass plate 18, and changes may be made in the forms, dimensions and arrangement of parts of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof.
\Vhat I claim is:
1. A ph )tograph printing machine of the class (lOSCI'lbOtl, which embodies a. lamp box: a table board disposed to serve as a top wall of said lamp box, said table board being pro vided with an opening extending downwardly therethrough to the interior of said lamp box; a. transparent plate removably disposed within said hole with its top sur face registering with the top surface of said table board; means for releasably clamping a photographic negative on said transparent plate; a platen board hinged to a edge portion of said table board and adapted to be swung on its hinges to engage and disengage the top surface of said table board evenly to press a sensitized photographic paper against a negative disposed on said transparent plate, said platen board being provided with a slot extending therethrough from its engaging side to its other side; a clamping member freely disposed to extend through said slot and provided with integral clamping means operatively disposed to be adapted to clamp an edge portion of sensitized photographic paper in a required position against the engaging surface of said platen board; resilient means associated with said platen board and with said clamping member, and operatively disposed to press said clamping member in a direction to cause said clamping means to clamp said paper against the engaging side of said platen board; and a fixed bumper associated with said table, and disposed operatively to be engaged with that portion of said clamping member that projects from said other side of said platen board to release said clamping member in opposition to the force of said resilient means and in response to the act of swinging said platen board upwardly and baekwardly away :i'rom the transparent plate and negative.
2. in a device of the class described, the combination with an apertured support having a transparent plate in the aperture thereof and means to clamp a photographic negative on said plate of a platen board hinged to said support and having a spring pressed means to normally clamp a sheet of senstized paper against the engaging face thereof, and a bumper carried by the support engageable by the paper clam ping means when the platen is swung to aninoperative -position away from the transparent plate and negative to auton'iatically release said paper clampin means from the paper and the paper from the platen board.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination with an apertured support having a transparent plate in the aperture thereof and men s to clamp a photographic negatire on said plate, of a platen board hinged to an edge o'l said support and having a slot extending therethrough from its engaging side to its other side, freely disposed to extend through said slot and provided with integral clamping means 01 eratively disposedto clamp an edge portion of sensitized photographic paper in position against the engaging face of said platen board, a resilient means associated with said platen boa rd and with said clamping member and disposed to press said clamping member in direction to cause the same to clamp the paper against the engaging side of the platen board, and a fixed bumper associated with said support and disposed to be en aged by that portion of the clamping member that projects from said other side of said platen board to more said clamping member in opposition to the l orce of said resilient means and thereby aua clamping member tomatically release the clamping means from the paper and the paper from the platen board when the latter is swung to an inoperative position away from the transparent plate and negative. v
