To all "LU/LOW, it may concern Be it known that" I, ANDREW HARMON lVALLAoE, of the city of St. Catherines, in the county of Lincoln, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Photographic- Printing Devices, of which the following is the specification.
My invention relates to improvements in photographic printing devices and the object of the invention is to devise a simple adjustable device for printing a white border around a photograph of any size and which may also be adjusted to print any width of border desired and it consists essentially of a main frame having a window opening and window therein, two frame members extending at right angles one to the other along two adjacent sides of the window, resilient means for holding the plates flat against the surface of the frame, means'for raising one or both of such members to free the underlying film, co-acting adjustable frame members extending along the opposite sides of the window, a covering shutter and adjustable stops supported by one of the members of the right angular frame portion as hereinafter more particularly explained by the following specification.
Figure 1, is a general perspective view of my device, showing the covering shutter raised. Fig. 2, is a similar view of Fig. 1, showing the position the parts assume when freeing the film. Fig. 3, is a cross section through Fig. 1, showing the shutter in its closed position. Fig. 4, is a sectional detail of the means for connecting the adjustable frame members of the frame.
In the drawings like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure. A is a printing frame provided with a window orifice A and a window glass A secured within the orifice. v
B is the usual shutter formed in two parts B and B hinged together and provided with any suitable securing means.
0 is a bracket secured to one side of the frame and to which is connected a hinged plate Cf. j
C is a frame member extending along one side of the window opening A and suitably secured to the hinge plate C. i
C is a hingespring having a tendency to hold down the frame member in the horizontal position shown in Fig. 1. The frame member C is provided with a series of gradnations C.
D is a frame member extending at right angles to the frame member C The frame angular position shown in Fig. 2. It will also be understood that the adjacent ends of the members C and D overlap.
E are diagonally disposed slots formed in the member C E is a right angular gage plate provided with pins E extending down into the slots E so as to be in frictional engagement with the sides thereof.
E and E are two pair of cross slots formed in the member C and F1 and E are supplemental gage plates provided with pins E extending into the slots E and E so as to be in frictional engagement with the sides thereof.
H is a raising lever pivoted at H and provided with a pin H extending inwardly intothe notch A and extending beneath the plate C.
I and I are co-acting adjustable frame members slidably connected to the rods 1 and I by clips I and I, such clips coinprising a sleeve I to which the adjustable members are directly connected and spring latches I carried by the sleeve designed to engage with the series of notches I formed in the rods 1 and I In this present application 1 do not lay any particular claims to the construction of this form of clip and the adjustable member connected thereto as it forms a portion of the subject matter of a previously filed application.
When it is desired to print a picture the film 1 is placed on the glass A and on top of the adjustable members I and I see dotted lines in Fig. 1, with two of its edges extending at right angles to each other beneath the frame members C and D, such frame members being in the position shown in Fig. 2. The lever H is then thrown down into the position shown in Fig. '1, releasing the frame member C which is carried down against the face of the frame by means of the hinged spring C and on top of the frame member I) extending at right angles thereto. The spring C is slightly stronger than the resiliency of the lips D and, therefore, when the frame member C is released it forces the frame member I) into the horizontal position shown in Fig. 1. and on top of the edge of the film. The stop plates E, E and E are then adjusted to print the required width of white border on the paper. The paper 2 is then laid upon the top of the film with its edge against the inner edge of the plate E, E and E. The adjustable frame members I and I are also adjusted beneath the film and paper to print the corresponding width of white border along the corresponding sides of the paper. The shutter B is then thrown over into the position shown in Fig. 3 covering the paper and is secured in any usual manner.
From this description it will be seen that I have devised a very simple form of print ing frame for printing a white border around a photograph of any size and by which the width of the border may be varied according to the desire of the operator.
hat I claim as my invention is.
1. In a photographic printing device, the combination with the frame having an opening, of a frame portion comprising two members extending at right angles one to the other and extending along two adjacent sides of the opening, and overlapping at their adjacent ends, resilient means tending to raise the underlying portions, and resilient means for forcing the overlying portion down against the frame, means for raising such overlying portion, and co-acting adjustable frame members extending along the opposite sides of the opening, as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a photographic printing device, the combination with the frame having an opening, of a frame portion comprising two frame members extending at right angles one to the other, and provided with suitably arranged graduations, means for holding the frame portion against the film supported by the frame and co-acting adjustable frame members extending along the opposite sides of the opening, and a covering shutter extending over the opening, as and for the purpose specified.
3. In a photographic printing device, the combination with the frame having an open ing, of a frame portion comprising two frame members extending at right angles one to the other, stop plates carried by one of the frame members against which the edge of the paper overlying the film is designed to extend and rest, means for holding the frame portions against the film supported by the frame and co-acting adjustable frame members extending along the opposite sides of the opening, and a covering shutter extending over the opening, as and for the purpose specified.

In a photographic printing device, the combination with the frame having an opening, of a. frame portion comprising two frame members extending at right angles one to the other, adjustable stop plates car'- ried by one of the frame members against which the edge of the paper overlying the film is designed to extend and rest, means for holding the frame portion against the negative supported by the frame, co-acting adjustable frame members extending along the opposite sides of the opening and a covering shutter extending over the opening, as and for the purpose specified.
5. In a photographic printing device, the combination with the frame having an opening, of a frame portion comprising two frame members extending at right angles one to the other, one of such members being provided with cross slots, adjustable plates provided with pins extending down into such slots and in frictional engagement with the sides of the slots, means for holding the frame portion against the film supported by the frame, co-acting adjustable frame members extending along the opposite sides of the opening, and a covering shutter extending over the opening, as and for the purpose specified.
6. In a photographic printing device, the combination with the frame having an opening, of a frame member comprising two portions, one portion hinged at the side of the window opening and provided with resilient means for forcing such member into a horizontal position, and a portion underlying the aforesaid portion at its end, as and for the purpose specified.
7. In a photographic printing device, the combination with the frame having an opening, of a frame member comprising two pertions, one portion hinged at the side of the window opening and provided with resilient means for forcing such member into a horizontal position, and a portion underlying the aforesaid portion at its end, and provided with resilient means tending to raise such portion when freed, as and for the purpose specified.
8. In a photographic printing device, the combination with the frame having an opening, of a frame portion comprising two separate cooperating members extending at right angles one to the other along two sides of the opening, and stop pins carried by one of the members and adjustable transversely thereof, as and for the purpose specified.
9. In a photographic printing device, the combination with the frame having an opening, of a frame portion comprising two separate cooperating members extending at right angles one to the other along two sides of the lO-i opening, and stop pins carried by one of the members and adjustable transversely thereof, and a transverse series of graduations on such member by which the stop pins are set, as and for the purpose specified.
10. In a photographic printing device, the combination with a frame having an opening opposite which the negative and overlying paper are designed to be supported, of a frame member formed of thin sheet material overhanging the edges of the frame opening and comprising two portions, one of said portions extending at its edge between the marginal edges of the negative and the paper," and means for raising such portion, as and for the purpose specified.
11. In a photographic printing device, the combination with a frame having an opening opposite which the negative and overlying paper are designed to be supported, of a frame member formed of thin sheet material overhanging the edges of the frame opening and comprising two portions, one of said port-ions extending at its edge between the marginal edges of the negative and the paper, and means for raising each portion, as and for the purpose specified.
12. In a photographic printing device, the combination with a frame having an opening opposite which the negative and overlying paper are designed to be supported, of a frame portion formed'of thin sheet mate rial comprising two separate cooperating members extending at right angles one to the other along two adjacent sides of the opening and at their edges between the film and the paper, one member being raisable,
as and for the purpose specified.
13. In a photographic printing device, the combination with a frame having an opening opposite which the negative and overlying paper are designed to be supported, of a frame portion comprising two separate cooperating raisable members extending at right angles one to the other along two adj acentsides of the opening and at their edges between the marginal edge of the film and the paper, as and for the purpose specified.
14:. In a photographic printing device, the combination with the frame having an opening, of a frame portion comprising two separate cooperating members extending at right angles one to the other along two adjacent sides of the opening, one member raisable to permit placing the edge of the negative beneath it and having a spring tendency downward to hold the negative as and for the purpose specified.
15. In a photographic printing device, the combination With the frame having an opening, of a masking portion comprising two members stationary as to lateral movement extending at right angles one to the other along two adjacent sides of the opening one member raisable to permit placing the negative beneath it, co-acting adjustable masking members extending along the opposite sides of the opening and a covering shutter extending over the opening as and for the purpose specified.
16. A photographic printing frame, comprising a frame member provided with a transparent panel, a cover adapted to extend over the upper surface of the frame member, and clamping means pivotally mounted on said frame member adjacent to said panel, and adapted to be revolved to. a position between said transparent panel and cover, to releaseand engage a negative independently of said cover.
17. A photographic printing frame, comprising a frame member provided with a transparent panel, a clamp comprising a strip of metal hinged to said frame member, and adapted to be revolved to engage and release a negative, tension means acting on said clamp, and a cover hinged to the frame member and adapted to extend over said panel in overlapping engagement with said clamp.
18. A photographic printing frame, comprising a frame member provided with a transparent panel, a clamp comprising a strip of metal hinged at its outer margin to said frame member, and adapted to be revolved to engage and release a negative, tension means acting on said clamp, adjacent to its outer margin, and a cover hinged to'the frame member and adapted to extend over said panel in overlapping engagement with said clamp.
