Description
N. PETERS. PHOTO LTHOGRAPHER WASHINGTON o c @with tate @anni @frn D.o,.MCNE1L,1vI.n,oFDE WITT, IOWA. -Letters Patent No. 68,523, dated iS'epjtember 3, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN GHURNS.
@Ligt ttgehult ninfa tu in .tlgcst ttitas atrnt :mounting mrt n f tige smut.
TO ALL WHOM I'l MAY CONOERN Be it known that I, D. C. MeNEIL, M. D., of De Witt, in the county of Clinton, and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Churns; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable othersskilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates toan improvement in churns, and consists in a revolving flasher, composed of two paddles, each consisting of two rectangular frames, which I prefer to make ot' unequal dimensions, and are set at right angles to one another upon an axis. A reciprocating motion, imparted by a treadle,`operates a crank rotating the axis. The churn, which I prefer making rectangular at top, is provided with a semi-cylindrical bottom, in which is a faucet to run oii the buttermilk. The dashers or paddles, witl1 .their axis, are then removed from the churn, and the butter readily removed at one operation. In the accompanying drawings- Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section of my improved churn, and
Figure 2 is a transverse section thereof` at line :v i
`Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A. A is the churn-box, having a semi-cylindrical bottom, B, in which is the faucet to run 'oiY the butterf milk. The paddle-dashers, two in number, consist of two rectangular frames C C', and I prefer making the frame C smaller than C, as shown in the drawings. The axis D is journalled in the uprights d d, which slide in grooves a in 'the churn-box A, the uprights being secured in place by the hand-screws E;
The churn Ais operated by the treadle F, its reciprocating motion being converted into a rotary motion through the-connecting-rodf, working-beam G, pitman H, and crank 7L. v When the buttermilk is run olf through the faucet b, the working-beam G is disconnected from the pitman H, and the lids K K opened, the thumbscrews E unscrewed, the uprights d carrying with them the axis D, and paddle-dashers removed from the churnbox A, and the butter, already well drained from the buttermillgis then removed at a single operation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The churn, consistingot` the churn-box A and paddle-flashers C C', all as set forth, in combination with the treadle F, connecting-rod, working-beam, and crank, orv their respective equivalents, in manner substantially as above set forth and described. i
2. The paddle-flashers G C, having their axis D journalled in -thc movable uprights bin manner and 4for the purposes substantially as described. l
This above speciiication of my invention signed by me this 28th day of June, 1867.
D. C. McNEIL, M. D.
