EMBALMINGDEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 685,220, dated October 22 1901.
Application filed January 28 1901; Berial No. 45,137. (No model.)
To all whom. it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEVI L. FLETCHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Golumbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Embalming Devices; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to a device for use in the art of embalming, and is designed to provide means for attachment to the arm or other portion of the body in which an incision is to be made to catch any blood or other fluid that may escape from the incision.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and eifective device of this kind which may be readily and conveniently applied and removed and which will effectually subserve the purpose intended.
With this and other minor objects in view the; invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view illustrating the mode of use of the invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the embalming device, which consists of an elongated semicircular or U-shaped pan or receiving vessel which is open at the top or one side and closed at each end and curved and tapered from its center to each end to conform to the shape or contour of the arm or other portion of the body to be operated upon. Each end of the vessel is provided with means for connecting it to the part to which it is to be applied, the same consisting of straps 2, springs, or other suitable device, which are adapted to be passed around the arm or a portion of the body to which the vessel is to be applied to hold said vessel in position thereon. .At one end the vessel is provided with a nipple or tubular projection 3, which is adapted to receive one end of a rubber hose or tube 8, through which the blood or other fluid received therein may drain ofl" into a bottle or other suitable receptacle 4.
The mode of employing the invention in practice in embalming a body through an incision in the arm is clearly illustrated in Fig. 1, from which it will be seen that any blood or other fluid flowing from the incision will be received by the pan or vessel 1, which will thus act'in the nature of a catch-basin, and will thence flow through the hose or tube 3 into the bottle or other receiver 4.
The device is advantageous in providing simple and effective means for catching all the escaping fluids, and thus preventing soiling of the clothing and avoiding all liability of the same coming in contact with the person of the operator and causing deleterious effects.
The device may be conveniently applied and removed and is adapted to be easily transported and may be made of rubber or any other suitable material which will effectually stand sterilizing and render the device thoroughly antiseptic.
While the embodiment of the invention herein disclosed is preferable, itwill of course one end being provided with a projecting nipple for the attachment thereto of a draintube, and a fastening at each end of the vessel to suspend it from the partof the body to which it is desired to attach it, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses. V
LEVI L. FLETCHER. Witnessesi DELMER I. FLETCHER,
