OBSTETRICAL DEVICE.
S1 ECHI'CATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 685,171, dated October 22, 1901. Application filed March 30} 1901. Serial No. 53,614. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY WATROUS Posr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Fultonville, in the county of Montgomery and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Obstetrical Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in devices for assisting women in the progress of labor or child-bearing; and the object is to provide a device of this character that shall be simple in construction and easily attached to a bedstead and by the use of which a woman is enabled to place herself in the most advantageous position and where she can use her strength with the best results.
I will describe an obstetrical device embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing an obstetrical device embodying my invention as applied to a bedstead, and Fig. 2 is a side view of one of the hand-grips and its attachments.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a strap of any suitable yielding material that will not scratch or deface the bedstead, around the footboard of which the strap is designed to be placed. The strap may be adjusted as to length by a buckle connection 2. Attached to the strap are hand-grips or handles 3, consisting of rubber or other soft material, and each hand grip is mounted on a loop 4, engaging with an eye 5, which has swivel connection or is mounted to turn in a plate 6, adapted to slide on the strap, so that the two handles may be placed at any desired distance apart, and by mounting the handles on the swivel eyes the strap will not be distorted by the turning of the handles by movements of the patient.
In the operation during labor the woman places her feet against the footboard and draws upon the handles, and as the strap may slide on the footboard a straight pull on one or both of the handles in line with the persons body under all conditions or posi-' tions of the body is possible, which is a very essential feature of the device.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent An obstetrical device, comprising a strap adapted to have a sliding movement on an end board of a bedstead, slide-plates mount ed to'move toward and from each other on the strap, loops having swinging connection with the plates and hand grips mounted on the loops.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HENRY WATROUS POST; Witnesses:
