UNITED STATES I PATENT OFFICE.
HERBERT OROMWELL GILES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SASH FASTENER OR LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 685,129, dated October 22, 1901.
Application filed Tune 10, 1901. Serial No. 63 |877. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HERBERT CROMWELL GILES, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash Fasteners'or Locks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates to improvements in sash fasteners or looks; and the object of the invention is to provide a device which will enable the sash to be raised for a limited distance while yet holding it effectually locked against being opened from the outside sufficiently to permit an intruder to enter by the window. I have aimed, further, to construct the fastener in such a manner that when desired the sashes may be locked in their closed position, preventing their being opened for even the limited distance mentioned.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of sufficient portion .of an upper and lower sash to illustrate the application of the invention. Fig. 2 is a view at right angles to Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a plan view. Fig. 4 is a detail view.
In carrying out my invention as thus illustrated I provide a plate a, designed to be socured to the face of the nppersash bymeans of screws or the like, (indicated at 5.) A long finger or projection o is carried by this plate v of a length corresponding to the amount of movement which it is desired to allow for the sash. This finger extends downward from the upper end of the plate and parallel with the face thereof and may have its lower end slightly tapered, as shown. To cooperate with this finger, a locking-lever d is provided, suitably pivoted to the lower sash, as by a pin or screw, and this lever has a transverse opening f through its end corresponding in size to the cross-sections of-the finger c. It will thus be seen that when the locking-lever is swung so that the opening f is in line with the finger the lower sash may be raised or the upper sash lowered until the walls of the open ingfstrike against the portion which con nects the finger with the plate,- when any further movement of either sash is elfectually prevented. When, however, the locking lever is swung out from under the finger, the
.with the finger, so that any attempt to move one of the sashes will causethe end of the fingerto contact with the plate, which will effectually resist further movement. The plate g is preferably concaved or hollowed on its upper surface, as indicated at g. I preferably also provide a pivoted detent h on the end of the locking-lever by which the locking-lever may be held against accidental disengagement.
Having described my invention, what I claim is-- 1. In combination with the upper and lower sashes of a window, a depending finger carried by one of said sashes, a locking member carried by the other having an opening for receiving the finger, and means carried by the locking member for obstructing said open ing, substantially as described.
2. In combination with the upper and lower sashes of a window, a plate secured to one sash having a vertical finger, a pivoted lever carried by the other sash having an opening to receive said finger, a movable locking-plate for. covering said opening, and retaining means on said lever.
3. In combination with the upper and lower sashes of a window, a depending finger carried on one of said sashes, a locking member carried by the other having an opening for receiving said finger, means for obstructing said opening, said locking member being adapted to be swung laterallyinto and out of engagement with said vertical finger and retaining means for the locking member, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
HERBERT OROMWELL GILES.
