Be it known that we, JOSEPH H. Winrnmso'rron and JAMES LonD, bothof Philadelphia, in the State of Penn. Sylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spinning-Jacks; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full'and exact description ot' the construction and operation ot" the some, reference being had to the annexed dra-wings, forming part hereof, in which drawings- Figure 1 is a. perspective view of a. portion of a spinning-jack showing the application of our improvement thereto.
Figure 2, an end elevation of the same.
Figure 3, a front elevation ofthe carriage end track, showing the race-pulley W.
The object of our improvement is to aid the spinner in winding the yarn on the bobbins, and to secure :t more regular twist in the yarn. Y 4 l To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our improvement, we will proceed to describe its construction and mode of operation. i
In the drawings, A represents the floor of a mill; B and Ortho-track upon which the carriage D (that port of the jack bearing the spindles) moves to and from the rollerbeain. This roller-beam does not appear in the drawings, but it forms a. wcll-known part of' the jackframe,`ol` which the beams E, F, and G constitute the rear side. H is e. shaft, with bearings :it J and K; it carries two pulleys L and M, of Awhich L is a fast and M e, loose pulley, also a fast pulley N for the raee-belt, which gives motion to the carriages and spindles. O is the starting-bnr, which has a. free sliding motion, as shown. It is caused to press in the direction o f the arrows by mechanism not shown. It carries the fork I, by which the belt, which transmits power from the main shaft of the mill to the spinning-jack, is guided on und off the fast pulley L.
The parts thus for specified belong to spinning-jacks in general, and they are here described only to enable us more easily topoirt out' the construction and mode of operation of ourimprovements. lhus:
We attach a. small wheel, R, `to the starting-bar `O by psssinga.V suitable stud through a. slot in this bar, as shown, There is e nut, a, by screwing or unscrcwing which this wheel R is heldin the desired position. S is an upright bnr, its upper end passing through a guide, as shown. It has attached to it rigidly, by set-screws or their equivalents, a. projecting curved piece, T, which is intended to be kept in contact with wheel It. The lower end of the` bar S is joined by a hinge to the lever U, which is supported at its middle by the stand V' to which it is pivoted. X sind Y are two adjustable slides curved on one side and grooved on the other. They are placed on the lever U, one on each side of the .stand V, and fastened in place each by o. set-screw. rJhc slide X is intendedto be plcced at such a. point on the lever U that the race-pulley W shall come in contact with it at or nbout the time the carriage is started inwards. The slide Y may be placed so that the race-pulley shall come in contact with it, and thus at such peint as the spinner may desire to stop the inward motion of the carriage.
The operation of vour improvement is us follows: When the carriage D is out the spinner starts it in as usual, and the race-pulley Wet once comes in contact with theslideX, and thus deprcsses the outer ond of' the lever U, and correspondingly elcvates the inner end of the sonic lever, forcing the projection 'l' against the wheel R, which moves the starting-bar O, causing the fork I to guide the driving-belt partly on to the fest pulley L, and thus assist the spinner to turn thc spindles and wind up the yarn. 'lhe carriage continuing its movement inwards the race-pulley W comes in contact with the slide Y, which depresses the inner end of the lever U, causing the fork I .to throw the driving-belt on to the loose pulley hl, and thus stop the movement of the jack.
Having thus described our invention, we claim, and desire to secure hy Letters Patentl. The lever U, adjustable slides :ind Y, har S, curved projection T, nmlwhcel lt, in coinhiimtion with a spinning-jack, in the manner and for the purpose substantially as shown and described. 2. The bar S, curved projection T, and wheel R, in combination with the .slnrtingdmr t.) ot n spinningjaok, substantially as described. 7 y JOSEPH H. WINTERBOT'IOM, i JAMES LORD.
