TO IIOlVARD FOLDING EXHiBlT-=B )X.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 684,711, dated October 15, 1901-.
Serial No. 65,012. (No model) To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LYNDON O. PALMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Folding Exhibit-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in folding exhibit-boxes, and pertains to a box in which the goods to be sold are suitably packed or placed and in which the cover is so attached and constructed that when the box is open the cover is held in a vertical position for exhibiting the goods therein and to display a label or other advertising matter upon the inside of the cover of the box.
Referring now to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a box embodying my invention, the same being shown open for exhibit purposes. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the box partially closed. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the box closed. Fig. 4: is a perspective view of'my improved box, showing the covers hinged to the sides of the body portions and the end of the covers hinged or connected.
In my improved box there are two main or body portions in which the goods are to be placed or packed, and each body portion is provided with a cover, the cover being loosely connected or hinged to the adjacent ends of the bodies or main portions of the box and the inner edges of the covers hinged. When the box is opened, the body portions extend slightly at an angle, constituting a V-shaped space between them, and the tops or covers are supported in a vertical position, while a broad base for supporting the box is also provided.
Bearing this broad construction in mind, the invention in detail consists of two main or body portions A, in which the goods to be shipped and to be sold are suitably packed. These body portions A are separate and are indirectly connected at one end through the medium of the covers B (in a manner to be presently explained) and are connected at their opposite ends through the medium of a suitable connection 0. This connection Cis usually made of flexible material, and preferably consists of a piece of tape or other fabric, which has its ends a pasted or cemented to the inner sides of the main or body portion A. Each of the covers B is hinged. to adjacent ends of the body portions A through the medium of a suitable flexible connection D, which is preferably composed of fabric for the purpose of strength and durability. The inner edges of these covers 13 and at their outer sides are suitably conneoted by means of a suitable flexible connection E, which preferably consists of a piece of fabric pasted or cemented to the adjacent on ter sides of the covers B, as shown.
In operation when the box is placed upon 6 the counter of a store or upon a table or other object for exhibiting the goods to be sold therefrom the body portions A assume the position shown in Fig. 1, which constitutesa V-shaped space F between the inner sides of the portions A. For the purpose of limiting the distance of separation of the free ends of the portions A the flexible ligament G, before referred to, is used and the covers B (when the box is in an open position) assume an upright position and are so held, and thus exhibiting to the purchaser or observer a label or other advertising matter which may be placed upon the inner side of the covers B. When the box is to be shipped or is stored away either empty or packed with the goods, it is folded in the position shown in Fig. 3, which brings the outer sides of the covers B together and one box resting upon the other, constituting in appearance two separate boxes, one placed upside down upon the other.
A box of this construction is exceedingly convenient for shipping and storing when folded and has the advantage of exhibiting an advertisement upon the inner sides of the covers B when opened out upon a suitable support for exhibition purposes.
While I have here shown and described and prefer to hinge the covers B to the ends of the main portions, yet it will be readily understood that the covers can be hinged or suitably connected to the sides of the boxes and the boxes placed end to end instead of side to side, and in this event the ends of the 169 covers will be hinged together, as illustrated in Fig. 4, and without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A folding box consisting of a plurality of body portions, a separate cover for each portion, the ends of the covers being flexibly connected to adjacent ends of the body portions, and a flexible connection between the adjacent sides of the covers independent of the body portion, substantially as described. 2. An improved box comprising two main portions, two separate covers having their ends flexibly connected to adjacent ends of the body portions, the adjacent outer sides of the covers provided with a flexible connection independent of the body portions, and a connection between the ends of the body portions opposite the covers, substantially as described.
3. An improved box, comprising two body portions, two covers flexibly connected with the adjacent ends of the body portionsthrough the medium of transversely-arranged flexible strips, the adjacent sides of the covers provided with alongitudinally-arranged flexible connection, and a connection between the opposite ends of the body portions, substantially as described.
4. An improved box comprising two body portions, a cover for each portion, the said covers being flexibly connected to adjacent portions of the body portions, and the adjacent portions of the covers provided with a flexible connection independent of the body portions, substantially as described.
5. An improved box, comprising two main portions, a cover for each portion, the covers flexibly connected to adjacent parts of the said body portions, the adjacent portions of the covers provided with a flexible connection independent of the body portions and the opposite ends of the main portions hav ing a connecting-ligament, substantially as described.
6. An improved box comprising separate main portions, a cover for each main portion, a hinge connection between the covers and adjacent parts of the main portions, and a hinge connection between adjacent parts of the covers independent of the body portions, substantially as described.
7. An improved box comprising two main portions, a cover hinged to each portion, a hinge connection between the adjacent parts of the covers independent of the body portions, and a flexible connection connecting the opposite ends of the main portions, sub- 6o stantially as described.
8. An improved box consistingof two main portions and two covers, the main portions being separate and independent, and hinge connections between the covers independent of the body portions and between the covers and the main portions of the box, substantially. as described.
9. An improved box comprising two separate boxes each having a hinged cover, boxes situated side by side and connected through the medium of a connection between the outer side of adjacent parts of the covers, substantially as described.
10. An improved box comprising two sepa- LYNDON C. PALMER.
