ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMILE BICK, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
TOILET ARTICLE.
SEECIFICATIO forming part 0f Letters Patent N0. 684,172, dated October 8, 1901.
Application filed February 26, 1901. SerialNo. 49,016 (No model.)
To @ZZ whom iv' may concern:
Be it known that I, EMILE BICK', a citizen of the Republic of France, residing at Buf; falo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Hair-Brushes, of which the following` is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in the class of hair-brushes which are provided with passages or pockets for holding combs.
The construction and arrangement of parts are as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of my invention with a comb inserted in the protecting-pocket. Fig.
2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a central cross-section through the head of the brush, and Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section through lthe same.
The head A of the brush is shown circular in form, and the handle ct is suitably tapered to enable it to be grasped and held with ease. Bristles Z1 are secured in one side of the head A, and al circular mirror B is secured in a recess in the opposite side or back of the same. The back of the brush is provided with a rim 0r fiange c, which projects beyond the face of the mirror B, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and thus protects the mirror from injury by contact with surfaces or other objects upon which the brush may be laid.
The brush is provided With a pocket C for receiving and holding a comb D, as shown. Such pocket C is a slot or passage formed in the head between the bristle holder and brush-back proper and extends into the handle a a sudcient distance to accommodate a comb of moderate length. Such slot or pas sage C is intended to be made of such width laterally, especially between the brush-h older proper and the mirroreback, as to barely allow introduction of the comb D, so that to retain the comb in place under normal conditions I secure rubber strips c (see Fig. 4) in the outer end of the pocket C, so that the comb D is forced between them when being inserted and is then held by elastic contact therewith. The inner side of the handle a is practically in line with the back proper of the brush, and the pocket which extends into the saine is ofsufcient depth to allow the comb D to lie flush therein, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, and is also accessible, so that the thumb of the hand grasping the handle a may be pressed on the comb to force it out of the other end of the pocket.
I prefer to employ a metal comb, since it can be made very thin and yet have the requisite strength;
What I claim is- The hair-brush having a handle extended in line with its back, and a combpocket formed between the bristle-holder and the said back, and extending into the handle beyond the back where it is formed as an open recess adapted to receive the comb latwise and permit access thereto, for the purpose of forcing it out of the pocket, and a rubber strip inserted in the outer end of said recess, as shown and described.
EMILE Bion.
