Description

D. N.WEST.
, Milk Strainer.
No. 68.400. Patented Sept. 3, I867.
aiteh tetra 1 231112511 ffirr' DA V ll) N. WEST, OF SMITHSBU 1G, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AN D J. MONG HUGHES, OF GREENCASTLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 68,400, dated September 3, 1867;
IMPROVED MILK-BUCKET AND STRAINER.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it knownthat I, DAVID N. WEST, of Smithsburg, in the county of Washington, and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Milk-Buckets or Cans; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, makinga. part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1 represents a view of the bucket or can with its top or cover in position for transportation.
Figure 2 represents .a vertical section through the bucket or can, with its 'top inverted so as to serve as a strainer and top both, as in the act of milking.
Similar letters of reference where they occur in the separate figures denote like parts of the bucket or can in both of the drawings.
My invention consists in combining, with a bucket, can, or other suitable vessel for holding milk, an invertible cover that serves the double purpose of a cover and a strainer, as will be explained.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with reference to the drawings.
A represents the body of the bucket, can, or other vessel that is to contain the milk and B represents the cover thereof. A faucet, C, may be used to draw 01? the milk, and a bail, D, to carry it by, and a loop or handle, E, to aid in tipping it, when its contents are to be poured out of the top. V
When the body of the bucket or can is of the form shown in the drawing, viz, tapering, or larger at the top than at the bottom, then a cylindrical flange, a, is put on to the top or upper end of the body portion, so as to form a seat for the cover 13, whose flange b fits within that a of the body part.
The cover 13 is composed substantially of the flange 6, the conical portion 0, and the cylindrical portion :1. When this cover is put on to the bucket, can, or other vessel, for transportation of it and its contents, and the cap c is put over the cylindrical portion d, the whole appearance of the bucket and cover will be as shown in fig. 1. In addition to the parts above mentioned there is connected with the cover 13 a wire gauze, f, hooks g for holding the straining-cloth 7t, and catches 2' (one only being seen in the drawing) for holding the cover in place, when inverted and used as a strainer, as shownin fig. 2.
When used as a milking-buckehor for straining milk, the cover is inverted as shown in fig. 2, the hooks or I catches 2' taking under pins or studs arranged for that purpose in the body of, the bucket. The strainer-cloth h is then fastened to the points g, and rests over or upon the wire gauze f. Inthis condition the bucket is used as a common milking-bucket, the milk being strained as it passes into the bucket, and when in this condition, if even turned over or upset, as frequently happens, therewould he very little less of milk, as the top or cover is fastened on, and the cloth and gauze would allow Whatever passed through them to do so very slowly.
The milk being thus introduced into the bucket or can in a strained condition directly fromthe' cow, when full the cover is detached, the straining-cloth removed, and the cover inverted and put on, as shown in fig. 1, and the cap c put on, and the milk may be transported to market or elsewhere in the same bucket or can into which it was milked, and strained on passing in, thus avoiding so much handling of the milk.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with a bucket, can, or any other vessel for holding and transporting milk, an invertible cover, which is a cover and a strainer both, so that the same vessel may be used to milk. into, to strain the milk, and convey it to market or elsewhere, substantiallyas and for the purpose described. 7
