BODY-HANGER FOR VEHICLES SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 683,741, dated October 1, 1901. Application filed August 12, 190i. Serial No. 71,827. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES J. FETZER, a citiien of the United States, residing at Columbiana, in the county of Oolumbiana and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Body-Hangers for Vehicles; .and I do herebydeclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to the art of carriagemaking, and has particular reference to improvements in hangers for securing the body of a vehicle to its supporting-springs. It has further reference to hangers of the double type, as exemplified by United States Letters Patent No. 595,133, issued December 7, 1897, to Samuel R. Bailey, having a laterally-projecting spring-plate as the means of attachment. Hangers of this class have heretofore been secured in position by bolts passing through the projecting spring plate and spring. They have also been secured by clips for binding the spring-plate to its supporting-spring; but so far as I am aware there has never before been a hanger invented or produced capable of universal attachment either by through-bolts or clips without the necessity of changing the length of the vehicle-reach and its attachments.
The main object and purpose of my pres ent invention, therefore, is the production of an interchangeable hanger capable of meeting all requirements of the trade whether for a through-bolt or a clip attachment without alteration in the length of the vehicle-reach and irons.
A further object is the production of a hanger of most compact and economical proportions, the body or bar whereof occupies a plane parallel with and immediately adj oining that occupied by its supporting-spring, this fixed relation between said spring and bar being at all times maintained regardless of the mode of connecting them.
The invention will be hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims following.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of this application, and whereon corresponding letters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, Figure 1 represents in side elevation the running-gear of a vehicle with my improved body-hangers secured to the springs, the reach being broken away for economy of space. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of my invention applied to an elliptic end spring. Fig. 3 is avertical section through spring and hanger, taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Figs. 4 and 5 are detached views of the invention, representing the same in plan and in front elevation, respectively. Fig. 6 is a modification of the invention corresponding with Fig. 3, but showing the hanger secured to its supporting-spring by through-bolts.
Reference being had to the drawings and letters thereon, A represents a vehicle-body, B a vehicle-reach, and C D front and rear end springs, respectively, all of ordinary construction. Surmounting each spring 0 D is an attaching-plate E, integral with and projecting laterally from the hanger bar F proper, which terminates in downwardly and inwardly extending brackets G G, upon which latter the vehicle-body A rests and is secured either by clips or bolts, as the case may be.
H H represent clip-holes formed partly in plate E and partly in the bar F, thus perforating said plate and bar at their line of intersection ,as best shown by Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings. Passing through these holes H H are clips I I, of any approved construction, which are partially embedded in the surface of bar F and encircle its plate E, thus securely binding the structure to its supporting-spring.
This being a description of my invention in its preferred form of construction and means of attachment, it will be particularly noted that plate E may also be secured by means of through-bolts, as indicated by Fig. 6, in which event the width of plate E and the position of bar F with relation to its supporting-spring remains unaltered, so that. as a consequence standard reach and reach-irons are employed regardless of whether the hanger is clipped 0r bolted in position.
Heretofore it has been impossible to convert a bolted hanger into one of the clip type, owing to the reduced width of its attachingreaches of difierent lengths.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As an article of manufacture a bodyhanger provided with alateralattaching=p1ate perforated by clip-holes extendinginto the 15 hanger-bar, substantially as described.
2. As an article of manufacture a bodyhanger provided with a lateral attaching-plate having clip-holes formed partly in the plate and partly in the hanger-bar, substantially 20 as described.
