IMPROVEMENT IN BOOT-HEELS.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that I, JoHN HUBBEIIL, of the city of Bufi'alo, county of Erie, and State of-New York, have invented a new and improved Boot-Heel; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact (lescrip tion thereof, reference being had .to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure I is a perspective view of my improved boot-heel.

I am aware that a patent was granted to Edwin Dunbar on the twentieth day of June, 1865, No. 48,266, for an improved boot-heel, to which I herein refer; and I do not, therefore, claim the improvement therein described. i

t The nature of my invention consists in extending the metallic plate forming the exterior heel upwardly to connect with the-upper leather of the boot, so that the entire exterior heel (except the elastic tread-piece which i extends below the plate) shall be metal, having a glazed or polished finish, like leather, in a boot-heel embodying the principle of said Dunbars said patent. I v i In the construction of a heel according to Mr. Dunbars patent there is a thickness of sole-leather intervening between the metallic plate and the upper leather. This causes a break or seam between the two mate- 1 rials, which mars the'beauty and symmetry ofthe heel, and gives the appearance of a heel made of layers of different materials. My improvement remedies this defect, and produces a smooth, symmetrical, polished heel, of uniform appearance, above the elastic tread-piece of onematerial.

Having reference to the drawings, A represents a metallic plate of cast iron or of malleable iron, having an exterior form of a boot or shoe-heel, and an interior dove-tail form, as shown at a, Fig. II, for receiving an elastic tread-piece. It has an inner flange or rim, as represented at a, for the purpose of permanent attachment, by screws or otherwise, to the leather sole. Appropriate holes are made through this flange to permit its being fastened to the leather solo by screws, nails, or rivets. From this flange the metal is extended upwardly suilicieritly to meet the upper leather of the boot when the heel is put on, as shown at a Fig. III. The same extensionis shown at a, Figs. I and II. This extension encloses within it so much of the leather as is used for the heel, so as to permit the metal to come in close contact with the upper leather. The front part of the metal heel is hollowed out or made concave, as shown at a,-so as to conform to the'rounded form of the instep-sole, as represented at a in the drawings, making a perfectly exteriorly-formed metal heel. The exterior surface is made smooth and polished or glazed, and presents the appearance of leather. B represents an elastic treadpicce, made of India. rubber, gutta perchn, or other elastic material, and of such shape that it will exactly fit l and till the inside dovetail space in the metallic plate,nnd project below it one-fourth of an inch (more or less) to receive the heel-tread of the wearer.

The elasticity of tho tread-piece will permit it to be compressed to he put into the plate, and then'it expands and fills the dove-tail form of the plate, by which it is firmly held in-place without other fastening, forming an easy, noiseless, elastic tread. 7

These elastic tread pieces maybe changed from one heel to the other, so that both sides will wear alike, and new ones may be put inwhenever desired.

What I claim as my invention, and as an improvement upon the said Dunbars said patent,-and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

Extending the metallic heel-plate upwardly su'iiicient to meet the upper leather, as represented at (1 and making the front part concave, as shown at a, for the purposes and as described.
