SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 681,814, dated September 3, 1901.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that Ll/VARREN C. ROCKWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at and whose post-ofiice address is Mount Carmel, in the county of Northumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Shade Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in lamp-shade holders; and the primary object thereof is to provide a simple device which can readily be applied to the ordinary burner or improvement as a part of the burner, so as to more effectually hold the lamp-shade in place.

Further objects, as well as the peculiar construction of the invention, will be described hereinafter, recited in the claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a lamp-burner equipped with a preferred form of shadeholders. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the spring-fingers constructed in accord ance with my invention, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a shade-holder which may be applied to an ordinary burner.

Referring now to the drawings by numerals of reference, 1 designates a burner of ordinary construction, to which is supplied a plurality of upwardly -projecting spring-fingers 2. On the respective sides of these fingers are longitudinally arranged and inwardly bent right angular flanges 3 and 4, which form a groove for the reception of resilient packing 5, which may be of any suitable material, but preferably of the consistency of rubber. This material I prefer to make of a suitable non-fusible compound, and the ends of the strips 5 are cut away at an angle, so as to be engaged by the in wardlybent corners 6 and 7 of the flanges 3 and 4, whereby said strip is securely held in place. The faces of the strips are provided with corrugations to better engage the sides of the chimney or shade by frictional contact, and thereby prevent an accidental displacement thereof during the process of transportation of the lamp by hand or otherwise. By reason of the fact that the material used will be of Serial No. 62,786- (No model.)

resilient nature it will be better adapted to engage the sides of the shade or chimney and retain it seated by frictional contact than would a metal finger similar to the one now in use.

In Fig. 3 I have shown a slightly-modified form, in which the holder is in the form of an attachment which may readily be applied to any well-known burner. In this form 1 designates aspring-finger, to which is secured the holder 2, which comprises a strip of suitable material, having an opening 2 at its lower end, through which the finger 1 projects,and a kink or overlapping extension 2 at its upper end, which securely engages the finger 1 to hold the same in place. A loop 2 is formed on the extension of the holder and embraces the finger 1 to further provide against accidental displacement. The mate rial used in this construction is substantially the same as in the preferred form, and the manner of fastening is preferably identical with that heretofore described.

While I have specifically described what to me at this time appears to be the very best form of accomplishing the desired result, I would specifically have it understood that I do notlimit myself to the exact details shown, but reserve the right to make such slight changes and alterations as would properly come Within the scope of my invention and without departing from the spirit thereof.

Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a chimney-holder, the combination with a finger having side flanges; a resilient packing within said flanges and adapted to be held in place by the ends of said flanges.

2. A chimney-holderforlamps having longitudinally-arranged and inwardly-bent side flanges provided with overlapping ends or corners; and aresilient packing in the groove formed by said flanges, said packing being securely held in place by the overlapping ends or corners.

3. A chimneyholder comprising a strip adapted to be secured to the spring-fingers of an ordinary lamp-burner said strip having side flanges to form a groove; a resilient packcarried by the first-named strip and adapted no to engage the sides of the chimney by frietionai contact.
