Description

UNITED STATES ARTHUR Y. HUBBELL, OF
nEWDo P, HUBBELL-MANUFAOTURING co, OF NEW NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE YORK, N. Y.
DETERGENT COMPOSITION.
SPECIFICATION formingpart Of Letters Patent No. 681,324, dated August 27, 1901. Application filed May 23, 1901. Serial No 61,665. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, ARTHUR Y. HUBBELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newdorp, in the borough of Richmond and State of New York, have invented an article of manufacture for the purpose of securing, scrubbing, and cleaning, consisting of a scouring compound having a substance combined therewith forming a scouring-brush throughout its bulk, of which the followinggs a specification. 1x
Thisj-new article is adapted, when 'properly prepared, for ordinary scouring and for the bath and toilet; all of which will be fully described hereinafter. l
My composition, forming, as it does, an article of manufacture, consists of the following ingredients, combined in the proportions stated: soap, one hundred pounds; powdered silica, one hundred and fifty pounds; curled horsehair, six pounds. These ingredients are to be thoroughly mixed by agitation so as to be uniform throughout, by first reducing the soap to a liquid form and then adding the silica. When thoroughly mixed, add thereto the hair in small quantities until the hair shall have been evenly incorporated throughout the en-' tire mixture. When the compound shall have become sufficiently cooled and hardened to a degree that will enable it to retain its shape, it may then be pressed into any desired shape in the usual way.
It will be obvious that the hair will form a brush,while the soap and silica furnish a resolvent and scouring-powder, so that at one I and the same time and the surface instead of with but a single operation it cleans, scours, and scrubs. addition to these advantages the hair, being embedded firmly in the mass and lying flat on touching only with the point, cleans more rapidly and perfectly than the ordinary brush.
I'do not wish to confine myself to-tho exact formula herein stated, as the proportions will be slightly changed when Hlitlilll g the article for the bath or toilet.
I am aware that a cleansing compound composed-of soap and silicious substances has heretofore been made. I am also aware that hair has heretofore been incorporated in soap;
butI am not aware that a compound composed of soap, silicious substances, and hair has ever before been made.
described my invention, what Having thus and desire to secure by Letters I claim as new,
Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture a cakeof soap composed of soap, in substantially the proportions of one hundred parts of soap, one hundred and fifty parts of silica and six parts of curled hair, substantially as described.
Signed at New York city, New York and State of New day of May, A. D. 1901.
