HEATING=DIAPHRAGM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 680,494, dated August 13, 1901.
Application filed September 8, 1900. Serial No. 29,375. (No model.)
To (all whom it may concern."
Beit known that I, JOSEPH MEYER, of Bondhill, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain Improvements in Heating-Diaphragms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in heating-diaphragms such as are adapted for employment upon stoves and other heating-surfaces for supporting articles, and has for its object to provide a device of this character of a simple and inexpensive construction which shall be adapted for use in heating articles on the stove or in the oven where it is not desired to boil or cook such articles at a high temperature, such as would be imparted were the articles placed directly upon the stove itself.
The invention consists in certain novel features of the construction and arrangement of the several parts of the improved heatingdiaphragm, whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is made simpler, cheaper, and is otherwise better adapted and more convenient for use, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which serve to illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a substantially central vertical section through my improved heating-diaphragm. Fig. 2 is a similar view of a modified form thereof.
As shown in the drawings, the device consists of a piece 1 of plate or sheet metal, preferably circular in form, although it may be made in other shapes, having produced in it a number of openings 2 2, formed by parallel slits in the body portion of the sheet metal, the metal cut or pressed out to form each opening being left attached to the body of the plate 1 along one edge of the opening and being bent or extended down from the under side of the plate at right angles, as shown at be lessened to the extent desired by reason of the circulation of air permitted beneath the plate and through the openings 2 thereof. The lower edges or under sides of the feet or supports 3 are parallel to each other and to the top of the stove or other surface on which the improved device is supported, so as to permit of readily sliding the device about on the stove-top and serving to prevent said feet or supports from catching upon irregularities in the stove-top when so slid.
The size and number of the openings 2 may be varied at will, as may also the length of the feet or supports 3, in order to accommodate the device for different uses when it is desired that more or less of the heat from the stove or other heater shall be conducted to the article supported uponthe device.
The metal cut or punched from the plate 1 to form each opening 2 is divided into two parts by a transverse central .cut, one part being left attached to the body of the plate at each of two opposite sides or edges of the opening 2. These attached portions are then bent or extended down at right angles, as shown at 4 4, to form feet or supports at opposite sides of each opening 2. In this case each foot or support is of but half the size of the opening along which it extends.
In Fig. 2 is shown a construction wherein each opening 2 has at one side a foot or sup- .port 4 bent or extended down, as in Fig. 1,
and at the other or opposite side has an upwardly bent or extended support 5 to hold the article to be heated up above and out of contact with the body of the plate 1, so as to provide a space for the circulation of air between said body 1 and the article rested thereon, as well as a space between the plate and the heating-surface, as in the preceding forms of the device.
The bent parts or supports in each form of the device are extended in alinement with each other in series extended parallel with each other across the surface of the body of the device, so as to interfere as little as possible with the circulation of air beneath the body. The rows or series of bent portions or supports formed on the body produce between them channels adapted for the free passage of air-currents, and the air so conveyed across under the said body is adapted for contact at intervals in said channels with the under side of the vessel or article held on the device at the openings 2, so as to absorb heat from such article, as will be readily understood.
The improved heating diaphragm constructed as above described is of an extremely simple, light, and inexpensive nature, since it may readily be formed from quite thin metal plate by means of dies and does not require to be cast. The device is also very durable, is not liable to be broken, and is especially Well adapted for supporting articles upon a stove or in an oven and maintaining them in a hot condition without exposing them to a veryhigh temperature, but always escaping the boiling-point. The device may also be used for toasting bread, broiling, &c., especially the construction shown in Fig. 2. Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is
1. As an improved article of manufacture a heating-diaphragm comprising. a metallic body portion and supports, the said supports being formed by parallel slits in the body portion forming strips, said strips being divided transversely and bent at substantially right JOSEPH MEYER.
