Description

No. 680,l85. Patented Aug. 6, l90l.
G. F. TURNER.
STOVE GRATE.
(Application filed Dec. 4, 1900.)
(No mm.)
UNITED STATES CHARLES F. TURNER, OF HUNTER, NORTH DAKOTA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO DAVID H. HOUSTON, OF SAME PLACE.
STOVE-G RATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 680,185, dated August 6, 1901.
Application filed December 4, 1900. Serial No. 38,660. (No model.)
To all 1071 6727, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. TURNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hunter, in the county of Cass and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stove-Grates; and I do,
declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to stove-grates, and is especially adapted to be used in connection with ordinary duplex grates.
The object of my invention is to provide a wood and lignite burning supplementary grate which can be used in connection with an ordinary duplex coal-grate, and which supplementary grate iseasily and quickly combined with a duplex grate and combines with the duplex grate in such a manner as to make a novel and perfect working combinationgrate well adapted for use in burning wood or lignite coal.
The invention consists in the novel construction of the supplementary grate, which is adapted to unite with a duplex grate; and the invention also consists in the combination of the supplementary grate with the duplex coal-grate.
In the drawings similar characters of reference denote similar parts.
Figure l is a view in end elevation, showing the front end of the T-shaped wood and lignite burning supplementary grate when the same is supported on and combined with a duplex grate. Fig. 2 is a top planview of the wood and lignite burning supplementary grate. Fig. 3 is a view in side elevation of the wood and lignite burning supplementary grate. Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view of the wood and lignite burning supplementary grate, taken on the line 1 1 of Fig. 2, showing perforations through the grate.
In carrying out the invention a suitable metal supplementary grate A is formed and preferably having the top B perforated, and the perforations should be widened out toward the bottom of the grate, so as to better allow ashes and cinders to fall through the grate,
and the central downward projectton O of the grate may be made in one or more parts G O.
The supplementary grate A is applied to a duplex grate, as shown in Fig. 1, and by the downward central depending flange of the supplementary grate being placed between the slightly opened bottom of the duplex grate it follows that the top edges of the duplex grate are held inward and the outer edges of the wood and lignite burning sup plementary grate are supported thereon.
Then the shake-handle is applied to the left-hand side of the duplex grate and the handle is agitated, the wood and lignite burn ing supplementary grate is also agitated by being moved up and down by the rising-andfalling action of the outer top edges of the duplex grate, and the ashes from the fire sift through or off from the wood and lignite burning supplementary grate and fall into the coal-burning part of the duplex grate, when by turning the shake-handle over completely the ashes can be dumped through the central space between the lower sides of the halves of the duplex grate, while the fire is held up by the supplementary grate, and by revers ing the shake-handle the halves of the duplex grate come back to place and support the wood and lignite burning supplementary grate.
I claim 1. The combination of a duplex grate and' a supplementary grate resting upon and adapted to be moved by the duplex grate, said supplementary grate being provided with a depending flange arranged to pass between the halves of the duplex grate.
2. The combination of a duplex grate and a supplementary grate resting 'upon the du plex grate, said supplementary grate being provided with a depending flange arranged to pass bet-ween the halves of the duplex grate.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a sup plementary grate adapted to combine with a duplex grate, said supplementary grate having a depending flange adapted to pass between the halves of a duplex grate, for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES F. TURNER. Witnesses:
