Description

No. 680,|02. Patented Aug. 6, 190i. N. C. WODDWARD.
LOOP BAR FOB DRAFT DEVICES.
fi INVENTOR I 3; m l BY ATTORNEYS NORMAN CUMMINGS WO ODWARD,
PATENT ()FFICE.
OF HORNELLSVILLE, NEW- YORK.
LOOP-BAR FOR DRAFT DEVICES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 680,102, dated August 6, i901.
Application filed May 7, 1901- l'o all whom, it may concern/.
Be it known that I, NORMAN CUMMINGS WOODWARD, residing at Hornellsville, in the county of Steuben and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Loop-Bars for Use in Connec tion with Draft Devices, of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to loop-bars such as are used on doubletrees in connection with the rings or swivel-hooks which connect the doubletree to the plow, wagon, 850.
My invention consists in a loop-bar twisted or shaped in such manner as to allow greater freedom of movement in certain directions for the ring or swivel-hook used therewith.
My invention will be readily understood by inspection of the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan View of the doubletree with my improved loop-bar shown in connec tion therewith. Fig. 2 shows the doubletree attached to the pole of a wagon, onlyso much of said pole being shown as necessary to show the attaching means. Fig. 3 shows the doubletree with my loop-bar and a draft-ring therein. Fig. 4 is a detail top plan of my loop-bar detached. Fig. 5 is an end View of the same.
Similar letters and numerals refer to simi: lar parts throughout the drawings.
A designates an ordinary doubletree with singletrees attached. B is the loop-bar attached to the rear face of said doubletree. This loop-bar is twisted or bent so as to present two side members 1 l and a central member 2 substantially at right'angles thereto, as clearly shown in Fig. 4. The ends of this loop-bar are preferably flattened and perforated, as at 3, for the passage of screws 4 or other means of attachment to the doubletree. It will be seen that by this construction of loop-bar a member 2 is presented which is substantially at right angles to a plane passing through the center of the loop-bar and through the perforations 3 3, which plane would be parallel to the ground when the parts are in operative position and will be hereinafter spoken of as the plane of the loop- Serial No. 59,103. (No model.)
same plane as the doubletree parallel with the ground, and a more even pull on the doubletree will be obtained than in cases where the ring lies at right angles to the doubletree, as with the ordinary arched loopbar. Another and more important advantage resulting from this construction of loop-bar is that when the doubletree has been used on a plow with the swivel-ring 6 and hook 7 for attaching it to the plow-cle'vis it can be detached therefrom and attached to the pole of a wagon, as in Fig. 2, by simply turning the hook to one side along the face of the doubletree, placing in position under the hammerstrap 8, and inserting the king-bolt 9. It will be readily seen that with the ordinary arched loop-bar this is not possible, since a ring and hook lying at right angles to the doubletree would occupy more room than the Width of the doubletree, and accordingly could not be inserted under the hammer-strap. Hence before changing from plow to wagon the loop-bar would have to be removed, causing great trouble and inconvenience, with loss of time. With myinvention, however, the loopbar, with either hook or ring attachment, is left constantly on the doubletree as the hook swings to one side or the other, and the loopbar, no matter of what strength or thickness,
will never equal in thickness the thickness of a doubletree.
It is obvious that the loop-bar may be made of any desired material and may be twisted or bent into shape and may be cast or shaped in any other desired way.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1 A loop-bar adapted for use in connection with draft devices, said loop-bar being twisted or bent whereby the ring held thereby may lie in substantially the horizontal plane of the loop-bar.
2. A loop-bar adapted to be used in connection with draft devices, said loop-bar having side members 1 1, andoa central member 2 substantially at right angles to such side members, substantiallyas described and for the purposes set forth.
3. In combination with a doubletree and connecting-ring of a swivel-hook, a loop-bar adapted to be attached to such doubletree, said loop-bar being so shapedthat the swivelhook is permitted to lie and may be turned in a horizontal plane which is substantially that of the doublctree.
4. In combination with the doubletree and connecting-ring of a draft device, a loop-bar adapted to be attached to such doubletree, said loop-bar having side members 1 1 and central cross connecting member 2 between such side members, substantially as described.
NORMAN CUMMINGS WOODWARD.
