WRITING TABLET OR BLANK-BOOK HULUER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 679,267, dated July 23, 1901.
Application filed October 19, 1900. Serial No. 33,592. (No model.)
To wZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES V. STOCK- ETT, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Writing-Tablet or Blank-Book Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in writing-tablet or blank-book holders, and has for its objects to provide a simple and cheap holder, whose parts are easily operated to replace one book by another and also to afford a good hand-rest during the operation of writlug.
The invention may also be utilized as a newspaper-file and for like purposes.
The invention is illustrated in the accon1- panying drawings, in which Figure 1 illustrates a plan view of the device with ablank book held in position. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of a portion of the holder as would be seen by looking down ward on the upper end. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3 8 of Fig. 1. I
Referring to the drawings, A designates the base-board, which may be of any suitable stiff material, wood or metal, and at the top edgeb said board is provided at either corner with an angle-bracket c d, secured by screws. The bracket 0 at one end is provided with a bearing 6, forming one part of a hinge, and at the other end said bracket is provided with a vertically projecting stop lug f. The other bracket, d, at the opposite top corner of the board, is provided at one end with a vertically-projecting locking-lug g, which has a central vertical slot h, and on the outside said lug is provided with a countersink or depression z', which is made around three sides of said vertical slot. This bracket is also provided with a vertically-projecting stoplugf. A barj has one end hinged or pivoted in the bearing 6, and in practical operation said bar is passed preferably between the folded middle pages of a blank book or paper on, with its free end projecting beyond the edge of the book or paper and extending across the base-board A, and the free end of said bar is adapted to be lowered into said The free end of the hinged barj is provided with screw-threads 7s, and
a tapered or cone-shaped nut Z, havinga central screw-threaded hole a, is screwed onto the free end of said bar, and the small end of said nut is adapted to be entered into the countersink or depression t' in the bracket (Z, which locks it, and thereby the bar and book are retained in place. The lugs ff project vertically from the baseboard and form stops against which the upper end of the blank book abuts to prevent the blank book from becoming disengaged accidentally from the cross-har y.
The operation is simple and as follows: The hinged cross-bar j is first raised, as seen in Fig. 2. The book or paper to be placed on the holder is then opened, preferably to the folded middle pages, and the bar is then placed between said middle pages, and the book is then closed with the bar between the pages. The book and the free end of the bar are then turned down and the bar entered in the sloth, with the tapered nut Z taking on the outside of the lug g. The nut Z is then turned on the bar j until its small end enters the countersink or depression 6 in the bracket, and the bar is thereby held in place. It will thus be seen that the base-board will afford a good arm-rest while notes or other memoranda are made, and when one side of each page of the blank book has been filled the bar j may be raised and the book removed, turned over, and then replaced on the bar,
thereby presenting the reverse or blank sides of all the pages, which may then be written upon.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of a base-board; an angle-bracket secured to said base-board at one upper corner thereof, and provided at one end with a hinge-bearing and at its other end provided with a verticallyprojecting stop lug; a second anglebracket secured to the opposite upper corner of said base-board, and provided at one end with a vertically-slotted locking-lug in alinement with the hinge-bearing of the first-named angle-bracket, and also provided at its other end with a vertically-projecting stop-lug; a bar pivoted in said hingebearing and adapted to extend across said base-board to said vertically-slotted lockinglug; and means for securing said bar in said locking-lug, as set forth.
2. The combination of a base board; a bracket, a, secured to said base-board near one edge, said bracket provided at one end with a part-hinge bearing and the other end having a verticallyprojecting stop -1ug; a second bracket, d, secured to the base-board and pro- Vided at one end with a lug, g, and the other end having a vertically-projecting stop-lug; a cross-bar pivoted in the said part-hinge hearing and extending across the base-board to said lug, g; and means to secure the free end of said bar to said lug, for the purpose set forth.
3. In a writing-tablet or blank-book holder, the combination of a base-board; two brackets secured to the upper corners of said baseboard and provided with vertically-projecting stop-lugs and a bar pivoted to one of said brackets and adapted to be detachabiy secured to the other bracket, said bar extending across said base-board below, that is, to one side of the said stop-lugs, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
