Be it known that I, SAMUEL K. SNAVELY, a

citizen of the United States, and a resident of` Lititz, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Cigar-Molds, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in that class of molds designed'forshaping cigars; and the objects of the improvements are, first, to give a fanciful shape to finished cigars, and, second, to so construct a mold that the wrappers will not be broken or displaced while subjecting the cigars to the pressure of the molds.

The invention consists in the construction and combination of the various parts, as hereinafter fully described and then pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a section ot' a mold-box with the end removed, the lid being open and showing a mold wherein is partially embodied my invention, the swinging side of the follower being provided with a hinged ap. Fig. 2 is a side view of a mold similar to that shown in Fig. 1, the end of the mold-box being removed and the lid closed, but having the iiap open; Fig. 3, a view similar to that shown in Fig. 2, but showing the flap closed; and Fig. 4, a front elevation of one end of the mold-box and mold illustrated in Fig. l, the lid and the iiap being shown in a closed position. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a section of a mold-box having the lid open, in which box there is a special mold for each cigar, said molds being separated byl partitions. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section of the molds shown in Fig. 5, taken on broken line 6 6 of Fig. 7, the lid of the box being closed; Fig. '7, a transverse section of the molds, taken on broken line 7 7 of Fig. 6; and Fig. 8, an end elevation of a mold-box, showing a fillingblock in place. Referring to the details of the drawings, A indicates the mold-box; A', the bottom of the box open in front; A2, the back, and A3 the lid hinged to the back of the box, as shown vat a.

In Figs. l to et, inclusive, is illustrated a form of mold partially embodying my invention. The lower mold B is permanently secured to the bottom A of the mold-box, and the cigars to be shaped are laid longitudinally of said lower mold, extending from back A2 outward toward the edge a of said bottom A'. The stem b of lower mold B, on which rest the bodies of the cigars, is concave on a section from back A toward edge a". On the outer edge of lower mold B and longitudinally thereof is a rounded shoulder h', and said shoulder is connected with the vertical front b2 of said lower mold by a concave curve h3, as shown in Figs. l, 2, and 3, or said front b2 may be tangent to the outer part of the curve of shoulder b', as shown in Figs. 5 and 6. The body of the upper mold or follower D is rigidly secured to lid A3 of the mold-box. The

lstem d of follower D, engaging the bodies of the cigars, is also concave on a section from back A2 toward edge a.' of the mold-box. Near the outer edge of the body of follower D is a recess d', corresponding with the rounded shoulder b of the lower mold. To the lower portion of the swinging edge d2 of follower D is hinged a ap E, as shown at e. Said swinging edge d2 extends beyond shoulder b of the mold-bed, so that when the flap E is closed and in its normal position its inner face e forms the counterpart of front b2 of the lower mold whatever may be its shape. In operating, the lid of the mold-box being open, the cigars are laid side by side on the lower mold B and the follower D is closed, but with the flap E open, as shown in Fig. 2, pressing the bodies of the cigars to the shape of the mold, and said flap is then also closed, as seen in Fig. 3, to shape the tucks of the cigars. After the iap is closed a rod E' is inserted through holes a2 in said flap and in the ends tion, and in longitudinal outline the face of the stem g of the lower mold is concave, as shown at 1 in Fig. 6. On the outer end of each lower mold Gr is a rounded shoulder g', connected with stem g by a concave curve g2. The outer end of each lower mold may be approximately vertical to bottom A' of the moldbox, as shown by lines 3 in Fig. 6, and the ends g3 of face G' of lower mold G are drawn or sloped inward toward the body of said lower mold, for a purpose to be explained. The upper molds or followers H are rigidly secured to lid A3 of the mold-box, and they range with their respective lower molds. The face H of each follower H is also concave in cross-section, and in longitudinal outline the face of the stem h of the follower is of the same shape as that of the lower mold. In the outer end of each follower H is a recess h', corresponding with the rounded shoulder g' of the lower mold and connected with stem h by a convex curve d3. A depending lip H2 is formed on the outer end of each follower, and said lips extend down in front of or lap the outer ends of the lower molds, and the inner faces thereof conform in shape with that of the lower molds, and the ends of said faces of the followers are drawn or sloped inward toward the bodies thereof, for a purpose to be described. The ends of the face of the lower mold and of the follower shown in the first four figures may also be drawn or sloped inward toward the bodies, respectively, of said lower mold and follower. The outer ends of removable partitions F may be extended beyond the front of the mold-box, as seen at 5o fin Figs. 5, 6, 8, 9, and 10, and these extensions f may be connected by a rod M passing through openings therein,V and by which rod all of said partitions can be simultaneously removed from the mold-box. The ends of the mold-box are closed by wall-sections as and 0.4, secured, respectively, to the bottom thereof and to the lid, and by filling-blocks a5, removably inserted between said wall-sections. The thickness of the filling-blocks may be varied, so as to regulate the extent to which the followers may be closed upon the lower molds, and thus the pressure upon cigars of the same thickness may be regulated, or the same amount of pressure may be exerted on cigars of different thicknesses'. In operating the cigars are laid on the lower molds, and then the lidof the mold-box is slowly closed inl order that the cigars may gradually adj ust themselves to the shape of the molds. After the lid is fully closed the swinging vedge thereof may be secured in any well-known manner.

It is not necessary that the lid be permanently attached to the body of the mold-box, as it may be secured in place by pins at the end of the box and passing through holes in the lids, asis usual; but I prefer to hinge the lid to the back of the box, as shown. By this construction the pressure of the follower of the mold is applied successively to the different parts of the length of the cigar, and the wrapper and the filling can gradually yield themselves to the form of the mold without vunduly packing portions of the fillings and straining or tearing nthe wrapper. Drawing or sloping inward toward the. bodies thereof of the edges or ends of the faces ot' the lower molds and of the follower prevents those edges from catching in or injuring the ends of the cigars as the top of the mold-box is being closed or opened.

In Figs. 9 and 10 is illustrated one of my mold-boxes wherein both the hinged flap and the partitions are embodied. The lower molds 10 extend somewhat beyond bottom A' of the mold-box, and the upper molds or followers 11 range therewith. The flap 1. is hinged to the lid A3 at 13, and in the vertical portion of the flap are grooves 14, adapted to receive the ends f of the partitions F that extend beyond the lower molds.

I do not restrict myself to the shape of the molds herein shown and described, as it is evident that many alterations may be made therein without departing from the principle and scope of my invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isf l. The combination, in a cigar-mold, of a lower mold having the bearing-face of an end deflected from the bearing-face of the body thereof, a follower, and a iiap connected with an edge'of the follower through a hinge and forming the counterpart of the deiiected end of the lower mold, for the purpose specified.

2. The combination, in a cigar-mold, of a lower mold having the bearing-face of the outer end deected from the bearing-face of thebody thereof,a follower connected through a hinge with the lower mold, and a iiap connected through a hinge with the swinging edge of the follower and having its inner face forming the counterpart of the deiiected end of the lower mold, for the purpose specified.

3. The combination, in a cigar-mold, of a lower mold having a rounded shoulder on an end of the bearing-face, the outer extremity of said bearing-face being depressed, a follower connected through a hinge with the lower mold, and a iiap connected through a hinge with the swinging edge of the follower and having its inner face forming the coun- IOO IIO

terpart of the depressed outer extremity of the bearing-face of the lower mold, for the purpose specified.

4. The combination, in a mold-box, of a lid hinged to the mold-box, a series of lower molds on the bottom of the mold-box, a series of followers on the lid, and removable partitions separating the molds, for the purpose specified.

5. The combination, in a mold-box, of a lid, a series of lower molds on the bottom of the mold-box, a series of followers on the lid, removable partitions separating the molds and extending beyond the front of the mold-box, and a rod passing through said extensions, for the purpose specilied.

6. The combination, in a mold-box, of a lid, a series of lower molds on the bottom of the mold-box and having the bearing-face of the outer end deflected from the bearing-face of the body thereof, a series of followers on the lid, a flap having a hinge connection with the followers, its inner face forming the counterpart of the deeoted ends of the lower molds, and partitions separating the molds, for the purpose specified.

7. The combination, in a mold-box, of a lid hinged to the mold-box,a series of lower molds on the bottom of the mold-box and having the bearing-faces of the outer ends thereof depressed, a series of followers on the lid, a flap having a hinge connection with the swinging edges of the followers, its inner face forming the counterpart of the depressed ends of the lower molds, and removable partitions separating the molds, for the purpose specified.

8. The Combination, in a mold-box, of alid hinged to the mold-box, a series of lower molds on the bottom of the mold-box and having the bearing-faces of the outer ends thereof depressed, a series of followers on the lid, a iiap having a hinge connection with the swinging edges of the followers, its inner face forming the counterpart of the depressed ends of the lower molds, removable partitions separating the molds and extending beyond the front of the mold-box, and means for simultaneously removing all said partitions, for the purpose specified.

9. The combination, in a mold-box, of a lid hinged to the mold-box, a series of lower molds on the bottom of the mold-box and having the bearing-faces of the outer ends thereof depressed, a series of followers on the lid and having the bearing-faces of the ends drawn or sloped inward toward the bodies thereof, a flap having a hinge connection with the swinging edges of the followers, its inner face forming the counterpart of the depressed ends of the lower molds and having the ends of said counterpart drawn or sloped inward toward the bodies thereof, removable partitions separating the molds and extending beyond the front of the mold-box, and means for simultaneously removing all said partitions, for the purpose specified.
