Be it known that 1, WILLIAM L. Mourns, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, county of Ouyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tad-Feeding Devices, of which the following is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle so as to dis! inguish it from other inventions.
My invention relates to that class of ma chines designed to feed cut wads into sheilloading machines, and particularly to improvements in the wad-feeding device shown and described in my application for United States Letters Patent, Serial No. 705,363, filed February 13, 1899.
The general construction of my improved device is similar to that shown in the abovenamed application, the principal changes being directed, first, to the wad-holder, the im-' proved form of which permits the use of smooth-faced instead of the undulate cams and results in a smooth reciprocating and angular movement on the part of the wad-holder, an advantageous feature in large machines, and, second, to the wad-spout and means for removing the wad-holder.
I The annexed drawings and the following description set forth in detail certain mechanism embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.

represents a vertical longitudinal section of the entire machine, showing certain parts in the sectional plane in elevation.
In order that the operation of my specific improvement may be fully understood, I shall first describe briefly the general operation of the whole machine.
A wad-hopperA,.niountcd upon a frame B and having downwardly-converging sides, has slidably mounted in it a vertically-reciprocable plate 0, upon the upper edge ofwhich is hingede movable wad-holder 1), formed I with a wad-race d. A lifter E, vertically reciprocable, engages the under surface of the wad-holder. The'lower ends of plate 0 and litter E are each provided with a roller E and C, respectively. Two rotatable cams F and G, driven by suitable shafting H and J, gearing J and J, and a driving-pulley J respectively engage and oscillate two levers K and L, whose ends engage the rollers E and C respectively, as shown. The two cams are so constructed and placed relatively to each other that upon their rotation the plate 0 and lifter E will be simultaneously raised until the plate reaches the upper extremity of its stroke, from which point, however, the lifter is further raised, so as to tilt the wadholder upon its pivotal center, as shown in Fig. 11 in dotted lines. The cams continuing their rotation, the reverse of the above operation takes place, plate, litter, and wad-holder reassuming their original positions.

At the point in the hopper-wall contiguous to the hinged end of the wad-holder when the plate 0 is at the upper extremity of its reciprocal stroke is formed a discharge-opening A, Fig. II. The end of the holder contiguous to the wadspout or discharge-openingA is provided with a hood D, which. overhangs the wad-race and is of a height such that a ivad may pass over a wad belomin the race.
