in the county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bale-Band Fastenings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to bale-band fastenings, and has special reference to that type of fastenings commonly known in the art as cotton-ties or cotton-tie buckles, designed for effecting a fastening between the ends of the bands encircling a bale, while at the same time permitting the bands to be tightened about the latter.

To this end the .invention contemplates a simple and thoroughly-practical form of baleband fastening or cotton-tie buckleeasily fitted to the band and comprising positive and reliable means for effectually preventing the band from slipping or rending without injuring or frac-turing the band, so that the original strength of the latter may be maintained,

In many types of bale-band fastenings or cotton-tie buckles the band is so held and deformed as to materially weaken the same, and thus cause a frequent rending thereof; but the device forming the subject-matter of the present application entirely obviates these difficulties and at the same time serves to effectually prevent slipping during and after the taking up of the slack, while also being so constructed as to become more firmly locked upon the band as the expansive force of the bale may be increased by the tightening of the bands thereon.

With these and many other objects in View, which will more readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated, and claimed.

The essential features of the invention involved in the novel construction and relation of parts are necessarily susceptible to modification without departing from the spirit or scope of the inventiong but the preferred. em-

In carrying out the present invention it is the purpose to provide a minimum number of parts with an entire absence of pivotal joints or other forms of connection between the separate parts of the device which are liable to become broken, and thus interfere with the proper tightening of the bands upon the bale, while at the same time providing means for causing such a gripping and holding of the band as to positively prevent slipping and at the same time holding it in such a way as not to injure or fracture the same.

Fig. 2 is a simi- In the accomplishment of these general objects the fastening or tie constituting the present invention essentially consists of two parts or members-namely, the buckle member or plate l and the stirrup member 2--said members being readily separable one from the'other and having no permanent connection therebetween. The main buckle member l essentially consists of an approximatelyrectangular plate having a band-receiving eye or opening 3, producing at one end the attaching cross-bar e, leaving at the opposite end the iiattened clamp-lip 5.

In connection with the flattened clamp-lip 5 of the buckle plate or frame lit is to be observed that the latter is preferably made of a somewhat-tapering width with inclined side portions 6, so that the terminal clamplip 5 will be of a sufficiently narrow width to freely project through the eye or opening 7 of the stirrup member, to be presently referred to. It should be observed that the said clamp-lip 5 also preferably has a slight inward deflection with reference to the bale, as plainly shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, and in addition to the features mentioned the buckle plate or frame l is provided at the .end of the opening 3 opposite the cross-bar 4;

with an outturned fulcrum projection orlug 8, preferably formed integrally with the buckle plate or frame and bent outwardly therefrom to serve as a holding-hook for the stirrup member, as well as afulcrum-point to permit of the gripping action between the buckle member and said stirrup member.

The stirrup member 2 is of substantially the construction already described, the same consisting, essentially, of an approximately rectangular frame having the band-receiving eye or opening '7 and the opposite cross-bars 9 and l0, respectively, the bar 9 constituting a fnlcrum-bar cooperating with the projection or lng S ofthe buckle member and the other bar 10 constituting a clamping element or bar cooperating with the inner face or sideof the clamp-lip 5.

To apply the invention to use, one end of the bale-band B is passed through the bandreceiving eye or opening 3 of the buckle member, around the attaching cross-bar if, and is riveted in place by a rivet R or equivalent permanent connection. The buckle member l is thus held to one end of the bale-band, while the detachable stirrup member 2 is freely removable and replaceable. Assuming the buckle member to be connected with the end of the bale-band which is passed over the top of the bale the other end of the band passing around the bottom of the bale is inserted through the band-receiving eye or opening 7 of the detachable stirrup, and the loose end of the band (designated by the nnmeral 12) is arranged at the outer side of the' stirrup. With the parts thus arranged the separate stirrup member 9 is slipped over the clamp-lip 5 until the upper bar 9 thereof is hooked over the fulcrum projection or lug S and the lower bar 10 is disposed at the inner side of the clamp-lip, with the free end portion ofthe band therebetween. By means of a suitable tightening-tool the loose or free end 12 of the band is grasped and the band drawn as tightly as desired about the bale, and when the free end of the bandis released the expansive pressure of the bale, tending to draw the separate members of the fastening apart necessarily produces a fulcrum action between the fulcrum-bar of the stirrup and the fulcrum projection of the member,

whereby the bar 10 of the stirrup and the clamp-lip of the buckle member become Very tightly jammed or pinched upon the band, thus eectually holding the same against slipping. The greater the expansive pressure of the bale the more tightly the two members of the fastening or tie become bound upon the band.

The construction described represents only one form of the invention, but illustrates the principle involved; but it will be understood that changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, isV

l. A fastening or tie of the class described, comprising a buckle member engaged at one end by one end of the band, and a detachable stirrup member arranged astride the buckle member and having a fulcrum connection therewith at the outer side thereof, said stirrup member having the side opposite its ful crum receiving the other end of the band, and cooperating as a clamp with the inner face ot' the contiguous end of the buckle member.

2. A fastening or tie of the class described, comprising a buckle member having a ful; cru m projection or lug at one side, and a stirrup member' obliquely and loosely striding the buckle member and having one bar engaged with said projection or lug, and its opposite baropposing the adjacent face of the buckle member at the side opposite the projection or lug. 95

3. A fastening or tie of the class described, comprising a buckle member having at one side an offstanding fulcrum projection or lug, and a separate detachable stirrup member essentially consisting of a rectangular frame adapted to be slipped over one end of the buckle member with one of its side bars loosely hooked upon said fnlcrum projection or lug.

4. A fastening or tic of the class described, comprising a buckle member having at one end a clamp-lip, and at one side an offstand ing fulcrum projection or lugz and a separate detachable stirrup member essentially consisting of a rectangular frame adapted to be slipped over the clamp-lip or clamping end of the buckle with one of its side bars loosely IOO IIO
