ANDREW M. ERICKSON, OF BARRETT, MINNESOTA.
,CUT'TER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Eatent No. 678,651, dated July 16, 1901.
Application filed April 22, 1901. Serial No. 56,991. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, ANDREW M. ERICKSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bar rett, in the county of Grant and State of Min= nesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gutters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.-
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in sleighs or cutters and its primary object is to provide a device of this character the runners of which are hinged to the body in a peculiar manner, whereby the cutter will ride smoothly over obstructions within the path thereof.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings,showing the preferred form of my invention,- and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the cutter. Fig. 2 is a detail view of a combined knee and brace.- Fig. 3 is a similar view of a cross piece. I
Referring to the drawings by numerals of reference, 1 is the body of the cutter, having a cross-beam 2, at each end of which are arranged two depending ears 3. Secured in each pair of ears is a pivot-pin 4, upon which isjournaled a tubular casting 5, formed at and extending laterally from the apex of a knee 6. Each member of the knee has an ear 7 at the lower end adapted to be secured upon a runner, and a curved brace 8 extends from the outer end of the tube 5 down to the side of a runner 9, to which it is secured. The knee, tube, and brace 8 are formed in one casting, as shown.
A curved brace 10 is secured at its ends to the rear end of the runner 9 and to the apex of the knee,and a horizontally-extendingbrace 11 is also secured to said apex. This brace 11 is tapered at its forward end and passes through the upwardly-curved forward end 12 of the runner 9. The ends of the braces 11 extend through slots 13, formed in the ends of a cross braee 14, and said ends are upset, so as to retain the cross-piece let thereon. This brace is pivotally mounted at the center upon a pin 15, which extends from a casting 16, secured to the bottom and front of the body 1.
Ears 17 extend from the ends of the brace 1 1, and these are connected by a rod 18, to which the shafts or pole of the cutter may be secured.
Additional braces, as 19, may be employed to strengthen the runners;
Should one of the runners strike an obstruc tion, it will swing upon its hinge and cause the cross-brace to rock upon its pivot. This movement is permitted by providing the slot ted grooves 13.
In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
I claim In a cutter, the combination with a body, of sets of ears depending therefrom, runners, a knee secured to each runner, a laterally-extending tube formed with each knee and journaled between one set of ears, a brace formed with the outer end of each tube and secured to its runner, a casting connected to the front of the body, a cross-brace pivoted to the casting and to the runners, and a rod to said brace.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ANDREW M. ERICKSON.
