SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No'. 277,949, dated May 22, 1883.

.To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HARMON L. SMi'rH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Watkins, in the county of Schuyler and State of New York, have invented a new and useful -Cultivator, of which the followingA is a speciiication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to cultivatorsyand it consists in certain improvements in the construction, arrangement, and operation of the same, whereby superior advantages are secured in point of simplicity, durability, cheapness, convenience, and general efficiency.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved cultivator. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the saine. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken through the point where the central beam is pivoted between the side beams.

Referring to the drawings, A A designate two rearwardly-divergent beams that form the V-frame of my cultivator. These beams A A carry suitably disposed cultivatorblades, B

u C, and are connected at their rear portions by a cross-piece, D, having slotted ends E E, through which pass nutted pins F F on the beams A A, and by which the latter can be laterally adjusted. This cross-piece D carries a rack-standard, G, the purpose of which` 'will be presently described. At their front ends the beams A A are provided with a slot, H, through which passes a cross-pin, I, on which the said beams move, by reason of the slos H, when they are adjusted at their rear en s. l l

J is a central beam, that is fulcrumed on the'cross-bar I, down between the side beams, A A, and swings between the latter. The rear end of the intermediate central beam, J, is adjustable in the .rack-standard G, and its front end is provided with a roller or wheel, K, which will, when the end oi' the beam J is adjusted at thetop. of the rack G, run on the ground vand elevate the cultivator-frame, so

that it can be transported on the said wheel` K after the manner of a wheelbarrow. By

reason of having the beam J pivoted down between the side beams, A A, and on a pin passing through the said beams A` A and J, the latter is adapted to carry a cultivator-blade, L, and serve the double function of a culti- `vator-beam and a lever for adjusting and elevating the frame, instead of being a mere elevating-lever, as is the case when it is pivoted in a casting above the beams A A and on a pin passing through the casting, handles, and lever, as in the patent to G. Jessup, No. 132,764, on which my invention is designed as an improvement. This improved construction and arrangement also secures simplicity in construction, and presents a more durable and eiiicient device.

,The handles M M of my improved cultivator are secured to the beams A A, and have no connection with the central intermediate beam, J.

' The operation and-advantages of my invention are obvious, and the merits of this improved cultivator will'be readily appreciated. I do not wish to be understood as claiming, broadly, the construction embodied in the above-named patent, as my claim is for my .own novel construction and arrangement of parts, whereby the advantages aboveset forth are secured over the said Jessup patent.

I claim as my inventionl. `As animprovementin cultivators,thecom bination, with the adjustable side beams, A A, carrying the cultivator-blades and connected together at their front ends by a single cross pin or bolt, of the intermediate central beam fulcrumed on the said bolt down between the side beams, so that it works between the same, and provided with the cultivator-blade and front wheel or roller, as set forth.

As an improvement in cultivators, the combination of the adjustable side-beams,AA, having the slots in their front ends, by which they are capable of lateral adjustment, the 9 cross pin or bolt connecting the said beams A A and passing through the said slots, the central intermediate beam, J, fulcrumed down between the beams A A on the'said cross-pin and carrying the front wheel or roller, and means for retaining the central beam in the position to which it has been adjusted, as set forth.
