PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH COCHRANE, OF -INDIANOLA, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WHEEL-PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,447, dated May 7, 1872.
Specification describing Improved Plow, invented by J OSEPH OOGHRANE, of Indianola, in the county of Warren and State of Iowa.
The invention Will first be fully described and then clearly pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of machine; Figs. 2 and 3, detail viws of lever and wheel; Figs. 4 and 5, detail views of back and front parts of frame; and Fig. 6, a view of forked lever.
E represents a frame, consisting of two parallel plow-beams, E E", each of which is provided with a plow, E 0 is a lever, pivoted to an upright standard, 1?, and connected, by a rigid strap, H, to the wheel N. A is another lever, placed on opposite side of frame and pivoted near the front thereof. This lever is also connected to wheel N by means of adjustable curved and elastic metal strap F. These two levers A O areeach provided with a detent, G, on their upper side, which catches at different elevations in the rack-frame B. By fastening these levers at different depressions the relation of wheels N N to plows E are thereby changed and the depth of their cut regulated; or they may be thus lifted from the ground altogether. D is a rear frame, pivoted by a king-bolt to frame E, and slotted in the center to receive a wheel, N. This wheel is hung in bearings K of a bifurcated lever, K, which extends up in front of the driver, has handle Q, and is ratcheted on one or both sides to receive a detent, J, at different points.
By raising and fastening the lever K in greater or less proximity to a perpendicular position, the pitch of the plow may be adjusted.
The wheels N N N are grooved on their peripheries in order to catch upon the soil and create uniformity and steadiness in the movement of the plows.
Having thus described all that is necessary to a full understanding of my invention, what I esteem to be new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is
The rear frame D, pivoted to the front frame E, supported by the adjustable wheel N and having the seat L, with levers A 0 arranged to be operated by the driver, as and for the purpose set forth.
JOSEPH COCHRANE.
