IMPROVEMENTIN WHEEL-nofws.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent Npf/ December 5, 1873.
//w To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that We, JOHN B. RALsroN and MATTHEW HARVEY, of Rockford,in the county of Vinuebago and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Vheel-Ilows 5 and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 is a side view of the machine with the landside-wheel removed. Fig. 2 is a deiached view of the. furrow-wheel and its adjusting devices. Fig. 3 is a detached view taken from the side of the rear box, and a portion of the plow-clamp broken away to show the perforation and the pin in position for holding the plow against lateral movement. Fig. 4 isa plan or top view of the machine; and Fig. V5is a transverse section through the rear box and clamp, taken through the point at which they are connected.
Similar letters of reference denote corresponding parts in all figures.
The invention consists, first, in a novel construction of clamps which hold the plow-beam, and of their connection with the lifting and guiding devices upon the frame, whereby any desired construction of plow may be attached to the sulky, as hereinafter described 5 second, in a novel construction of the tongue plate or frame, and of its connection with the crankaxle, whereby it is adapted to support the plow and the devices operating the same, as hereinafter described 5 and, third, in certain details of construction hereinafter explained.
In the drawings, A A represent the wheels, and B thc axle. This axle is made in doublecrank form, and the wheel A or land-wheel is connected directly to one end of it, the wheel A or furrow-wheel being connected to the other end through an adjustable stub-axle, a, which swings around a plate or segment, a, also mounted on the axle. The axle-plate is cut away to receive said segment, and is also perforated to receive a clamp-bolt, b. C is the tongue secured to the plate or frame, said frame extending backward and upward, and connected to the axle B at the upper corners of the crank-axle by loops c c. D is the frame, provided at its forward end with a socket for 51,054, dated May 19, 1874; application filed braced from the under side by means of rods O O', attached to it at its forward end, and
connected to the axle on each side midway between the wheels and the lower corners of the crank-axle. E is a rectangular link, the front` and rear parts being round and fitted and turning in suitable boxes, E1 E2, the one at the front, El, secured to the tongue-plate a little above the point at which the tongue is attached, and the other to the clamp I, to which the rear plow-clamp is swiveled. This rear box is provided with a rear extension, the cap of which is made narrower than the bottom for hinging a Y-shaped link, E3, which is connected at its upper end to the end of a bellcrank lever, F. This lever has its bearings or pivot in one of the arms of the frame, the drivers seat Gr being mounted on the other, so that the lever is within convenient reach of the driver. H is a ratchet-plate mounted upon the same arm of the frame as the lever, and in such relation thereto that a spring-pawl, f, mounted on the side of the lever comes in contact with the teeth of the plate for holding the lever in any position. I is the rear plow-clamp, said clamp being made in two parts, the upper part c' being larger than the lower part il,
vthe latter being a little wider than the heads of the bolts which secure the parts and the plow-beam in position. One of the bolt-holes in the top part, as also the one under it in the lower part, is made oblong', to admit of the adjustment of one of the bolts longitudinally for the reception of large or small beams. The upper part is provided near the center with a perforated stud, i3, said stud having a screwthread cut on its inner face, and is slightly beveled from the edge of the thread toits outer edge. This stud fits into a socket, i4, in the box E2, corresponding to its external outline, the two parts being held in position by means of a screw, e, the head of which rests upon the f face of the box E2. The stud is made 'a little longer than the socket, so that it shall be free to swivel in the box and allow the plow to have a free lateral swinging movement when required. The box and upper part of the clamp are perforated near their edges, as shown at e2, to receive a pin, e3, which, when inserted, prevents any lateral movement. This pin is within convenient reach of the driver, and can be inserted and removed at will.
To the rear end of the tongue is secured an arm, K, which extends out to about in line with the center of the drivers seat. To this arm is pivoted a cross-bar, L, provided with foot-rests or stirrups for guiding the plow, as will be explained. To the center of this crossbar L is connected an arm, L1, which is curved in such manner as to pass the brace C. To thel inner end oi' this arm L1 is connected a double-pivoted link, l, which, in turn, is connected to a clamp, L2, on the front end of the plow-beam.
It will be seen that, the plow turning with the stud 3 in the socket i4, the driver can guide the plow and turn the point to or from the land.
The operation of the several parts described will be understood without further description.
Having thus described the invention, what isclaimed as new, and sought to be secured by Letters Paten t, is
1. The clamp I, provided with the stud 3, in combination with the box E2, connected to the frame by pivoted links, for allowing the plow both a lateral and vertical movement, as de scribed.
2. The combination, with the clamp composed of plates M1, as described, of the vertical pin i3, box E2, and link E, all arranged and operating substantially as described.
3. The clamp L2, double-pivoted link l, arm L1, and cross-bar L, in combination with the plow-beam, having a vertical pivotal connection with the frame for turning the plow to or from theland, as described.
4. The combination of the forked or Y- shaped tongue frame, axle B, arm K, and cross-bar L, with its arm L1, all arranged for supporting and guiding the plow, in the manner described.
