GEORGE S. TAPPAN, OF PALMYRA, NEBRASKA.
SULKY-PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 236,193, dated January 4, 1881.
Application led June 21, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE S. TAPPAN, of Palmyra, in the county of Otoe and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sulky-Plows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains tomake and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form apart of this specification.
Figure l is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a side view, and Fig. 3 is a bottom plan.
Corresponding parts in the several ligures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to sullry-plows; and it consists in certain improvementsin the constructioh of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
The frame of my improved sulky-plow consists of a longitudinal and a transverse beam, A B, secured together at right angles, and connected by a third diagonal beam or brace, U,
at the junction of which latter with beam A the frame is secured to a block, D, adjoining the tongue E, which is hinged in a recess, F, in said block. Block D is provided with a transverse slot or mortise, G, in which is pivoted a stub-axle, H, the spindle of which carries the transporting-wheel I. A wheel or caster,-J, is journaled upon a spindle the stem of which is swiveled to the outer end ot' the frame-beam B. l
The frame-beams B C are connected by brackets K, forming bearings for a bell-crank lever, L, the lower end or arm of which is connected, by a rod, M, with the inner end of the pivoted stub-axle H. By means of this lever,
which is so located as to be readily controlled by the driver, the stub-axle may be turned so as to adjust the wheel I at any desired angle to the frame, thereby greatly assisting in turning the machine in the field. When not in use the lever may be retained in position by means ot' a catch, N, engaging an eye, O, in the upper end of an upright, P, upon the frame-beam G. 4
Q is a lever` pivoted to an upright, R, upon fulcrum connected, by means of a rod, S, to a bail, T, secured to the end of the frame-beam B at its junction with beam A, and encircling the (hinged) tongue E, as shown. of the beam B is hinged a forwardlyprojecting triangular frame, U, provided at its front end with a laterally-projecting stem, V, projecting out over the tongue E, and connected by a pivoted rod, W, with the front end of lever Q. The rear end or handle of said lever is under control of the driver, whose seat X is attached to a spring-bar, Y, secured upon the tongue near the rear end of the latter.
The beam Z of the plow A is provided with a transversely-pertbrated bail or bracket, B', by which it is adjusted upon the stem V ot' frame U, upon the outer side of the tongue. The latter is provided with a laterally-projecting pin, C', projecting over the plow-beam, for the purpose of holding the latter down sufliciently to compel the plow to remain in the ground v during operation.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation of my invention will be readily understood. By manipulating the lever Q the driver may readily raise or lower the front end of frame U, where the plow is attached, thus regulating the dept-h of furrow.
My improved sulky-plow is simple, durable, inexpensive, and easily operated.
On top Having thus described my invention, I claim vand desire to secure by Letters Patent ot' the United States- The combination, in a sulky-plow, of the block D, hinged tongue E, frame A B O, having bail T, hinged frame U, having stem V, lever Q, connecting-rods S W, and the plow, the beam of which is provided with atransverselyperforated bail or bracket, by which it is pivoted upon the stem V of the frame U, sul)- stantially as and for the purpose herein shown and specilied.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afXed my signature in presence ot two witnesses.
GEORGE S. TAPPAN.
