UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
LEMUEL M. KELLY, 0F LITGHFIELD, KENTUCKY.
IM PROVEM ENT IN GANG-PLOWS.
Specification forming part 0f Letters Patent N0. 213,906v dated April 1, 1879; application tiled December 7, 1878.
To all rwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEMUEL M. KELLY, of Litchfield, in the county of Grayson and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and Improved Gang-Plow, of which the following is a specification The invention consists of a plow in which the tongue and axle frame are combined witha pair of plow-beams, connected adjustably at the rear end and pivoted to tongue in front, so as to be readily operated by a handlever, as hereinafter described.
ln the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan view of my improved plow. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation on line x x of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a trans\f'erse section, looking toward the front.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The axle a is bent upward between the wheels b in rectangular form, and supports the seat c andthe inner end of the beam d. e e are side braces from the forward part of beam d to axle a. j' is a square or oblong frame, of metal or wooden strips, united at the angles by hinge-joints at g, and supported in an upright position by a lever, i, that is jointed at h to beam d, and extends to the rear, which lever i passes through an eye upon the under side of frame j', and is in turn adjustably supported by the bar k, which passes through an eye, l, on the elevated portion of axle a, and is held in place by a pin on the end of springbar m, which pin passes through eye l and bar 7c, the bar k being provided with a number of holes, so that the elevation of levert' and frame f may be adjusted.
The plOWst-andards n are formed with or connected to the horizontal arms o, of which there is one at each side of the frame f, connected rigidly therewith and extending forward to the hinge-joint p on beam d. This joint p is shown as a ring connecting the ends of arms o, and passing through a loop on beam d, forming a universal joint; but I do not limit myself to that particular form of connection.
The construction described permits of the elevation and depression, by means of lever i, of the frame f and arms o, to regulate the depth which the plows may penetrate. It also permits ot' side motion of the said parts on joint p.
To permit adjustment sidewise of arms o and regulation of the distance apart of the plow-standards n, the upper and lower sides of frame f are each made in two pieces lapped upon each other, as shown, and prevented from separating by the edges of one piece being bent around the other piece of the same side. The frame may be lengthened or shortened by sliding these parts in or out, which will move the arms o to or from each other. The parts are clamped in position by a screw, q, tted in a threaded hole in the under piece of each side, and passing through a slot, r, in the upper piece.
The plow described can be used as a walking-plow, if desired, in which case the seat c is not needed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the tongue and axle frame, having rod d, with eyes p h, the plowbeams o o, connected at the rear by a laterallyadjustable lift-frame, and in front with the eye p of tongue-frame, and the lever i, arranged as shown and described.
LEMUEL M. KELLY.
