WATCHMAKERS TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 678,186, dated July 9, 1901.
Application filed April 3,- 1901.

Be it known that I, OTTAVIO LAMACOHIA, a citizen of the United States,residing atB ridge port, in the county of Fairfield and State of.
Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inWatchmakers Tools; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in= vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention provides a tool of novel and compact construction for watchmakers and capable of a variety of uses either as a press, punch, staker, or the like, requiring the application of great force and the use of dies, punches, and kindred tools.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to" acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and drawings hereto attached.
While the essential and characteristic features of the invention are necessarily susceptible of modification, still the preferred embodiment of theinvention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a tool embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, parts being broken away. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the upper portion of the arm and the parts attached thereto on a larger scale. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the sleeve. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the tool-holder. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the head or collar. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of theset collar.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The tool comprises an arm 1, foot 2, and support 3, the latter being adjustable upon the vertical portion of the arm and held in the desired position by means of a clampscrew 4:. To provide for a nioety of adj ustment of the support 3, a set-screw 5 is interposed between the said support and foot 2. The arm is provided at its upper end with an overhanging portion terminating in a head 6, which is vertically apertured to receive the Serial No. 54,200. (No model.)
parts intimately associated with the press-- screw. The support 3 receives the plate 7, which supports the work and which is mounted for adjustment, being connected to the support by means of a screw or pivot fastening 8 and nut 9, the latter being fitted in a recess formed in the bottom side of the support 3. The plate 7 is provided with a series of openings or depressions of different sizes for cooperation therewith of punches or dies. The openings or depressions are concentric with the pivot-fastening 8 and are adapted to .be brought in vertical alinement with the axis of the press-screw by turning the plate upon its pivotal connection 8 with the support 3. A sleeve 10 is Vertically adjustable in the opening of the head 6 and is secured in the located position by means of a binding screw 11, threaded into an opening formed in a side of the head 6, and the upper end of the sleeve is formed with an inner fiange 12 to extend over the tool-holder 13 and over a shoulder 14 near the upper end of the press-screw 15. formed in a side of the sleeve 10 and is adapted to receive a pin 17, projected from the tool-holder 13 to direct the latter in its reciprocating movements and prevent rotation thereof with the press-screw. The tool-holder 13 is longitudinally bored, the upper end portion of the bore being enlarged and internally threaded to receive the threaded portion of the press-screw 15. The punch, die, or tool .18 is secured within the holder 13 by means of a binding-screw 19. The press-screw 15 is longitudinally bored, and its upper end is reduced and formsthe shoulder 14 and is adapted to receive the head or .collar 20, secured thereto by oppositely-disposed handles 21, threaded into openings formed at diametrically opposite points of the part 20. The lower end of the head or collar 20 is reduced and engages with the top side of the inner flange 12, the latter being confined between the part 20 and the shoulder 14, thereby preventing movement of the press-screw, which is essential in order to efiect a vertical movement of the tool-holder 13. parts being assembled substantially as shown and described, a rotation of the press-screw 15 effects a vertical movement of the toolholder 13 and the tool carried thereby, the
A vertical slot 16 is direction of movement being controlled by rotating the press-screw either to the right or to the left. It is oftentimes desirable to limit the downward movement of the toolholder and the tool carried thereby, and for this purpose limiting means are provided, and in the present instance consist of a set collar 22 and a stop 23, the latter consisting of a pin or stud extended inward from the opening of the set collar and entering the slot 16 of the sleeve 10. The set collar is secured to the sleeve 10 in an adjusted position by means of a binding-screw 24, and when the tool-holder has moved downward to the required limit the pin 17, coming in contact with the stop 23, prevents further downward movement thereof. By having the pressscrew bored in line with the bore of the toolholder a staking tool, punch, or the like may be placed in position from above through the press-screw and tool-holder, as will be readily understood. The work is placed upon the plate 7, which constitutes a bed or support therefor, said plate having been previously adjusted, so as to bring the required opening or depression in vertical alinement with the companion punch, die, or tool carried by the part 13. After the work has been placed in position upon the plate or bed 7 the pressscrew is operated to cause the tool to operate thereon either for pressing, punching,or other operation, as may be desired. For riveting stake or like work requiring the toolor punch to be tapped by hammer the clamp-screw 19 is backed, so as not to interfere with the free movements of the tool in the tool-holder and press-screw.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In a watchmakers tool, the combination with the tool, of a supporting-arm provided with pressure-applying mechanism for actuating the tool, a foot attached to the arm,a support having adjustable connection with the arm, adjusting means between said support and foot, and a plate constituting a base or bed for the work and having adjustable connection with the aforesaid support, substantially as set forth.
2. In a watchmakers tool, the combination of a sleeve having an inner flange, a tool holder mounted for reciprocation with said sleeve, a press-screw for actuating said toolholder and having an outer shoulder to engage with the lower side of the aforementioned inner flange, and a head secured to the projecting portion of the press-screw and adapted to engage with the opposite side of the aforesaid flange for cooperation there with and with the shoulder of the press-screw to prevent longitudinal movement of the said press-screw, substantially as setforth.
3. In a watchmakers tool, the combination of a sleeve having an inner flange, a longitudinally-bored tool-holder mounted for reciprocation within the said sleeve, a pressscreW mounted Within the tool-holder and having screw-thread connection therewith and longitudinally bored to admit of the passage of a tool therethrough, said tool-holder having its upper portion reduced to form a shoulder for engagement with the inner flange of the sleeve, and a head secured to the projecting portion of the press-screwand adapted to engage with the outer side of the aforementioned inner flange, substantially as set forth.
4. In combination, a supporting-arm having an opening, a sleeve adjustable in said opening having the inner flange, a tool-holder mounted for reciprocation in said sleeve, a press-screw for actuating the tool-holder and located therein and having its upper portion reduced and forming a shoulder to engage with the inner side of the aforementioned flange of the sleeve, a head fitted to the projecting end of the press-screw and adapted to engage with the outer side of the said inner flange, and handles fitted to said head and serving to secure it to the press-screw, substantially as set forth.
5. In combination, a longitudinally-slotted sleeve, a tool-holder mounted for reciprocation therein, means for operating said toolholder, and a set collar having adjustable 5 connection with the sleeve and provided with a stop for limiting the downward movement of the tool-holder, substantially as set forth. 6. In combination, a longitudinally-slotted sleeve, a tool-holder mounted in said sleeve, having an otfstanding part entering the slot of the sleeve to prevent rotation of the toolholder, actuating means for the tool-holder, and a set collar adapted to be adjustably connected with the said sleeve and having an inner extension entering the slot thereof and adapted to engage the offstanding portion of the tool-holder and limit the downward movement of the latter, substantially as set forth.
