Ameegaat.
To all whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, CHARLES C. GLADWIN,
a citizen of thevUnited States of America,
residing at Manhattan borough, county of New York, State vented certain new and useful Improvements in Punching-Tools, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
@This invention relates to an improvement in punches, theobject being to provide a punch arranged so that it can be used as a hand or bench punch; that is to say, held in the `hands while punching, or secured to a bench, theV punchV being arranged for both uses.
ne of the objects of my invention is to provide a punch or punch holder, provided with a punching tool that is removably supported, and also provided with depth and edge gages.
Further features of vmy improvement consist of strippers, by which means. the metal is readily stripped fromv the tool. v
Other advantageous structural improvements will also be hereinafter described.
I will now proceed to describe my invention in detail, the novel features of which I will point out in the appended claim, referother.
ence being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, wherein- Figure 1 1s a vertical sectional view of my improved punch, the handle being broken off; Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view thereof, the section being taken on a line 2--2 in Fig. 1 and not showin the strippers 26 hereinafter described;
in F ig. 1, the edge gage stops being omitted;
punch-holder, the section being taken on a line 4--4 in Fig. l.
As herein arranged my improved device consists of a holder 1 having a handle 2 and .brackets 3, the handle being used when the device is used for overhead work, in which position the device will have to beheld by one hand and the punch manipulated by the By means of the brackets 3 and screws or bolts, the device can be secured to al bench for bench punching. The holder l is provided with a jaw 4: into which the nia- 4 terial to be punched is placed. The bottom portion of the holder 1 carries aA die 5 which coperates with a tool or punch 6 carried by a tool-holder or stock 7 which in turn is carried by that portion of the holder above pecic'ation of Letters Patent.
of New York, have in-' ig. 8 is a sectional plan View, the section being taken on a line 3-3 i Patented July 20, 1915.
Application lei February 1, 1915. Serial No. `5,470.
The tool stock 7 consists of a threaded spindle which engages the threads 10 in the head 8. l lVhen the stock 7 is rotated it will move longitudinally inward or outward in this head 8 in accordance with the direction of rotation; hence, the punch 6 will be caused to move toward the die 5 or away therefrom. The tool or unch 6 is removably supported bythe stock and is provided with a head 11 fitting a counterbore 12 in the head 13 of the stock 7, the said head 13being square or hexagonal to receive a socket wrench. To hold the tool against longitudinal movement within the stock 7 I provide the counterbore 12 with threads to receive a threaded abut-- ment stud 14 which when screwed home will be jammed against the head 11 of the tool 6.
screw'16.
Upon the threaded shank of the holder 7 I mount a rotatable threaded collar 17 which constitutes a depth gage and limits the downward movement of the stock 7. By manipulating the gage or collar 17 I am able to control the movement of the punch,
that is to say, the downward-movement.
' A further feature 'of my improvement consists of the die 5 which is provided with an annular groove 18 which isV-shaped in cross section. A set-screw 19 holds the die in its seat or socket 20.. By means of the annular recess 18 I am able to quickly secure the die in place, there being no holes to be `alined' before the set-screw can be set up. Said annular recess orgroove 18 isadapted to receive the end of said screw in an angle, in order that said die may be held securely. To control the distance that a hole is to be made from the edge of the material, I kprovide adjustable stv ps21 carried by. graduated plates 2-2. The stops 21 are provided with slots 23 vthrough which set-screws 24 forward end of each gage or plate 22 is secured by a set-screw 25, passing through lateral lugs/25a of the holder l, said lugs being perforated and indicated by dotted lines 'on' Fig. 2.
' terial down, so that the tool can be readily mouth or jaw thereof and the material, the tool passing` withdrawn. For thin material I employ a stripper 27 in the form of a biturcated block, the opening 28 therein being but a little wider than the diameter of the punch 6. When the punch is to be withdrawn from thin material, I place the stripper 2T in the 4L between the upper wall through the'opening 2S. `When the tool is withdrawn the'stripper 27 will hold the material while the punch is being moved upwardly. a socket wrench upon stock 7.
LA further feature of improvement consists oitv a sight 29, which is apointedprojection carried by the headvS in alinement with the the head 13 of the Copies of this patent may ne Qhtained for To manipulate the punch I place y axis of the tool 6 as shown in Fig. 3 and ent is 4r In combination with a screw-tapped holder, anv externally. screw-threaded toolstock engaging said holder Jfor longitudinal adjustment and provided with a longitudinal central bore, a tool set into said bore.
means for locking said tool in said stock and a. collar screwed on said stock above said holder and constituting an adjustable stop which limits the movement l'of said stock and tool through the holder.
Signed at New York city, day of January, 1915.
p CHARLES C. GLADYVIN.
