UNITED STATES PATENT Onricn.
JAMES M. MOVVATT AND ALEXANDER MOlVATT, OF SPRINGFIELD, OHIO.
PROTECTOR FOR WOODWORKIN G-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 678,016, dated July 9, 1901. Application filed January 2, 1901. Serial No. 41,758. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
' Beit known that we,JAMEs M. MoWATrand ALEXANDER MowATT, citizens of the United States, residin g at Springfield, county of Clark, and State-of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Protectors for Woodworking-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to a new and useful improvement in protectors for woodworkingmachines, and has for its object to provide a protector which will prevent the hands of the workman from being accidentally injured by the revolving cutters used in woodworkingmachines, such as frizzing-machines and the like.
With this end in view this invention consists in the details of construction and combination ofelements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, the construction and operation will now be described in detail, referring to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of our invention, showin g in full lines the position it would be placed in when the machine was operating, and dotted lines show the position it would take when it was pushed back, so as to leave the bits of the cutter accessible for sharpening or adjusting. Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
In carrying out our invention as here embodied, A represents a standard, which is composed of the upright member A andthe horizontal member A This standard is secured to the bed-plate of the machine by means of the foot A which is formed with the upright A.
B is the. protector, which consists of the bell shaped portion 0. This bell O is open at its lower end and has the ringD secured to it by means of the lugs cl,'which are formed with the ring D, and the screw d,which passes through the lugs and is threaded into the lower rim of the bell O. The ring D has a circular opening in its center the same siZe as the diameter of the interior opening in the bell C. The upper end of the bell O has a hub E formed therewith which is interiorly threaded.
F is a threaded rod which has the eye G formed with it upon its upper end. This eye G is adapted to surround the horizontal member A of the standard, so as to be adjusted along said horizontal member. The bell O is suspended by means of the screw-rod F being threaded in the hub E of said bell. The horizontal member A of the standard extends directly over the revolving cutters of the machine, and at a point on the horizontal member A directly over the cutters a pin is placed.
When it is desired to operate the machine, the eye G is slid along the member A until the pin enters a cavity formed in the eye, which will center the protector directly over the cutters. Then the set-screw H is screwed down, clamping theeye in place. The bell O and ring D are then screwed down the screwrod F until the distance between the bedplate of the machine and the lower surface of the ring D is just sufficient to allow the work to, pass therebetween. Then the bell O is clamped in that position by the nut I, which is also threaded on the screw-rod F and will bind against the upper surface of the hub E. Then the material canbe passed over the cut ters and the work accomplished with as good results as without the protector, and the hands of the operator could not be drawn into the cutters from any cause whatsoever. The hell 0 has the slots J formed therein, so that the workman can see through and observe the grain of wood he is working upon. The openings K, formed through the ring D, are also for the same purpose.
When it is desired to sharpen or adjust the cutter or for another reason to have access thereto, the nut I is loosened and the protector B is screwed upward on the screw-rod F, and if that does not give sufficient room the set-screw H can be loosened and the whole apparatus slid backward to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
The rings D are easily removed from the bell O by removing the screw (1', so that rings of larger diameter can be secured to the bell for larger work.
Of course we do not wish to be limited to the exact construction here shown, as slight modifications could be made without departing from the spirit of our invention.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new and useful is- 1. A protector for woodworking machinery consisting of a bell-shaped portion having a protecting-ring secured to its lower edge, a standard having a horizontal member extending directly over the cutters of the machine, a screw-rod adapted to slide along the horizontal member of the standard, the bellshaped portion and ring adapted to be suspended by and adjustable upon said screwrod, means located upon the horizontal member of the standard for stopping and centering the movable members of the protector directly over the cutters, substantially as described and for the purpose specified 2. In combination with an apparatus of the character described, a standard secured to the bed-plate of the machine and having a horizontal member extending directly over the cutters of the machine, a screw-rod suspended from said horizontal member along which said screw-rod is adapted to be adjusted, means for centering and clamping said screw-rod in place upon the horizontal member, a shield threaded upon said screw-rod so as to be suspended by and adjusted vertically thereupon, consisting of a bell-shaped portion and a removable p rotecting-ring secu red to the lower end of the bell, openings formed through the bell-shaped portion and the ring, and a lock-nut also threaded upon the screwmember A adapted to register with and enter a cavity in the eye G for the purpose of stopping and centering the screw-rod directly over the cutters, a set screw adapted to clamp the eye G in place upon the horizontal member A a shield B consisting of the bellshaped portion 0 adapted to be threaded upon the screw-rod F, and a fiat ring D removably secured to the lower end of the bell-shaped portion 0, openings J formed through the walls of the bell-shaped portion 0, openings K formed through that portion of the ring which lies outside of the bell-shaped portion 0, and a lock-nut threaded upon the screwrod F and adapted to be bound against the bell -shaped portion C for the purpose of clamping the same in place, substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto affixed our signatures in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES M. MOWATT. ALEXANDER MOWATT.
