WOOD SHAPING MACHINE GUARD. v
No. 415,127. Pgls ented Nov. 12, 1889.
I UNITED STATES PATE T OFFICE.
CHARLES RUDOLPH, GUSTAV RUDERSDORF, GOTTLIEB LEMLEY, AND HENRY SIEGFRIED, OF YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO.
WOOD-SHAPING- MACHINE GUARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 415,127, dated November 12, 1889.
Application filed March 23, 1888.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that We, CHARLES RUDOLPH, GUSTAV RUDERsDoRF, GOTTLIEB LEMLEY, and HENRY SIEGFRIED, citizens of the United States, residing at Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vood-Shaping-Machine Guards; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of our invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
Our invention relates to that class of woodshaping-machine guards that are used with machines having knives set in a drum or collar attached to a vertical rotating spindle to protect from accident the hands of the operator by means of a shield over the unused parts of the knives; and its object is to provide a means whereby a guard may be fitted to spindles of different sizes and be readily adjustable vertically thereon, and at the same time protect the screw-threads on the spindle from injury from the clamp-screws employed to hold the guard in the adjusted position. We accomplish this object by the mechanism hereinafter described, and illustrated in the drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical central sectional view of the guard A in place over portions of the knives k 70 of a wood-shaper, shown in such parts as are necessary to illustrate our device. Fig. 2 is a top view of the guard A, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same.
There is shown in the drawings a table d, having a perforation or passage h for an upright spindle Z. Below the passage h there is a boxing c, forming a guiding-bearing for the said spindle. Above the table the spindle is provided with a fixed collar 00, supporting a knife-head 70, which may be of any suitable shape or construction and is held in position on the spindle by a smooth sleeve vb. This sleeve b in turn is firmly clamped against the upper side of the said knife-head by means of a nut m, which is screwed on the threaded I upper end of the spindle, as shown.
In order to protect the workman from the Serial No. 268,208. (No model.)
knives, we provide a guard, which, as shown, consists of a cylinder A, slightly larger than the knives, so as to cover them, and this cylinder is closed at one end, as shown at 0;, except that the said endis pierced by a perforation for the passage of the sleeve 19, before described. Surrounding the said perforation is an upwardly extending flange n, through which extend set-screws s. The cylinder A (and also its closed end) is provided with perforations e for the escape of dust when the apparatus is in operation.
It will be evident from the foregoing that the cylinder or guard A may be readily adjusted to expose a greater or less portion of the knives, as the character of the work may demand. Such adjustment may be accon1 plished by loosening the screws 8 and moving the guard up or down the sleeve 1) to the desired position, after which the screws may be tightened. It will thus be seen that the sleeve serves to hold the knives in place to adapt the guard to any size of spindle, since sleeves of different thicknesses may be used with the 7 5' same guard, and that the threads on the spin dle are thoroughly protected from the screws 3 by the said sleeve.
Having described the invention, what we claim is 1. The combination, with the spindle and knives thereon,of the sleeve 1) and the guard A, consisting of a cylinder with one end partially closed and provided with a central flanged perforation for the passage of said 8 5 sleeve, the said flange carrying set-screws, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination, with the spindle and knives thereon, of the sleeve 1) on the spindle above the knives and a guard for the knives 9o adjustable on said sleeve, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we hereunto affix our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES RUDOLPH. GUSTAV RUDERSDORF. GOTTLIEB LEMLEY. HENRY SIEGFRIED.
